And I'm sitting here like a lemon with a dual-core Phenom II?

cloasters 25th April, 2010 02:26 AM

Intel's six core i7's cost $999? AMD's six core Phenom II's will be about $300, max? I imagine the i7's sport a good deal more L2 Cache than the Phenom II's will, but the price advantage is serious!

Hope this really puts AMD back in the game!

It will, and it does, but it still leaves AMD relegated to the bargain bin. The bargain bin is NOT where AMD wants to be if they intend to push leading-edge technology development.

Granted, at the moment AMD are still basically fighting for their lives. The problem is that if you aren't moving forward and gaining ground, eventually you fall back and die.

It makes me want to buy one. :)

I wonder where the engineering talent that came up with the Athlon went?

According to a review that danrok kindly posted a link to, the hexa-core Phenom II isn't genuinely competitive with the six-core i7's. Except for a handful of benchmarks, the i7's and most of the i5's cream AMD's entrant in the race. Then again, how many folks can drop a grand on a proc?

Hope so Daniel. Although I have a two year old quad core Phenom, I think AMD is looking to gain again CPU market....

Good to see you posting again MrSeanKon!

Good to hear the outstanding movie music of days of yore again. Yes, Sean Connery was the only REAL JB.

Six cores on the cheap won't hurt anyone. Go AMD, we're right behind ya!

The real question is how well do these overclock?
