Knee injury!

I don't think I've brought this up before, but I thought I should share this with you guys.

In March of this year, I sustained, what seemed to be at the time, a pretty serious knee injury. I was playing football [or soccer for you guys across the pond], and as I turned, I felt my knee 'click' out of place and then 'click' back in again within about a second. Needless to say, I fell to the ground in absolute agony, unable to walk.

The same day, I went to the hospital, had an X-Ray done, and the doctor assured me it was just a sprain. Fair enough, I thought, so I gave it two weeks to recover as recommended. He referred me to physio, but typical of our health system here, I never received the letter to go.

The problem is, this injury is a recurring one. It's happened an additional two times since then, and on the third time it happened, I thought "That's enough!" I haven't been able to play any sports [I was supposed to be coming to the States this year on a Soccer scholarship] , I've taken a huge amount of time off work, and it's very, very frustrating. So I demanded that they refer me to a specialist; someone who knows what they're talking about. I'm only 18 [well, technically, 19 today], and to have such an injury when I have my whole life ahead of me is worrying.

That being said, thankfully, I have my appointment with the specialist tomorrow. My dad's told me that if the doctor manages to sort the report out in the near future, then he'll pay for me to go abroad and get an operation by a private doctor, since if I decide to wait on the NHS, I could be waiting a very long time.

What I basically want to ask is, is there anyone here who's sustained such an injury, or even a similar one? If you've managed to get it sorted, how did you do it? At the moment, I'm on Dicloflex; an anti-inflammatory drug to ease the swelling.

Cheers,

--Imy.

Yea, I've injured my knee before to where it came out of the socket and went back in, more than a few times.
I can tell you this much being that I'm turning 52 this year.
Even IF they repair it, (if the damage is that bad) it will come back to haunt you in your old age and just hurt from doing anything.
Walking, biking or anything that puts a lot of stress on it.
Sorry, but this is the facts of life...
This goes for any other bad injury you may sustain in your life as well.
When your young it's not that bad and you just go on about your business, but when you get old you feel it all over again but it never goes away then...Sucks...

My football is my priority. I'd rather get it fixed, be able to play football (earn a ridiculous amount of money) until I'm 35/40, and then suffer the repercussions later in life. It's not as if I'm going to be playing sports at 52 years of age. I'm hoping by that time, though, the health services have vastly improved and find some sort of a permanent solution for injuries such as these. Hey, you never know!

Ouch! Sorry to read about your knee problems. Take some heart in that LOADS of footballers have knackered knees but still manage to play at the highest level.

Probably what you should look to do ASAP is visit a private physio for ultrasound and cortisol injections. The NHS usually do nothing until your knee properly collapses, then will simply issue you a pair of crutches. X-rays aren't really very good at identifying problems with soft-tissue (cartilage, ligaments, tendons). You'll have had your appointment before reading this so can decide for yourself based on how happy you were with the specialist's service whether to refer to a private clinic or not.

There are quite a lot of websites devoted to knee anatomy which are well worth reading about. From what I've seen, footballers tend to do damage to the anterior cruciate ligament - damage to this ligament is mitigated by building up the thigh muscles to replace the support normally provided by ligaments.

There are ways around everything Happy birthday for yesterday!

I've just got back from the hospital.

The specialist told me it was my cruciate ligament, which isn't good news for me. I'm going to be having key-hole surgery soon. I had my pre-op today, and waiting for a letter for my operation date.

Cruciate ligament injuries are never fun, or so I've been told. The good news is though, I've given it two months rest, I'm a young lad, and, compared to other cruciate ligament injuries I've read about, it's not as bad in comparison.

So maybe there's hope for a full recovery yet!

So was it fully torn?

I understand that provided you stick to your post-op physio and rehab you can pretty much count on making a full recovery. So that's good then.

He didn't tell me. But I doubt it's fully torn, as I'm able to move, bend my knee pretty well, amongst other things. It's just painful when I put pressure on it [aka, running for long distances, sitting down on my knees, etc].

But yeah, I'm planning on sticking to my rehab program properly, and making sure it doesn't happen again. Even if it means I put on a bit of weight.

Wow! I miss everything! Sorry for your troubles. You seem to be getting it sorted out.

Many injuries do come back to haunt you. but I've had three wrist surgeries and my wrists are fine at 60...I've had terrible ankle injuries and they are fine as well.

I got a call from the hospital this morning. There's been a cancellation, so I've been fit in for an operation tomorrow at 7.30am.

Wish me luck guys!

I'm gonna have to go again soon. Yesterday, they keyhole'd me, stuck a camera in it, trimmed a bit of my cartilage and gave my knee a general clean up.

Gotta see the specialist again in two weeks; he's gonna explain to me what he found during his little journey in my knee and what my options are. But yeah, I have to go in again for reconstruction.

They filled my knee with fluid and it's swollen like hell. And the anesthetic wore off last night.

Long story short, ow.

You have to wait two weeks just to get the results? Man, that seems like a really long time. Hope you've got a bottle of pain killers and some good movies so you don't have to leave the couch for a day or two. Feel better.

Ice,
As you can see in my sig, I'm running an E4300 as well and OC'd to 3.0Ghz with no effort at all. I am using the Arctic Freezer Pro 7 as well. Would you tell me what settings you have to get 3.15Ghz and your Temps? Thanks.
