Let's Vote for our Leader

Well, I think Dan suggested that a vote be held to elect a "Benchmarking team" leader. Then that leader could pick a team to help with projects or something like that. Anyway, let's get some names on the table.

What would you have to offer the Team? I have some PHP Skillz (No comment Superman!) and a lot of knowledge about OC'ing and different video cards... And I have Spyder to help me lend advice

Rob has an even and thoughtful temperament as well as being graced with an unusual degree of humility. A good leader can attract those he needs to complete the task at hand.

To gain my support you will have to demonstrate similar qualities SiGmA_X. The essence of leadership is concern and consideration for those whom one would lead.
Can you do that?

I think the conflict here is my fault, I took the initiative to basically hand the leadership over to whomever took the first initiative. Sigma was the first, as well as others, but none of them are here asking for the position.

So I'm wondering, what constitutes "concern for those you would lead"??

Here's the thread that started it all, you'll note Sigma was the first member to express interest and to make a commitment to this project.

We are actually dealing with several issues here:

1. The demise of the 3d bench marks topic.
2. The creation of the Benchmarks topic.
3. The selection of leadership for the new topic.
5. The qualities I would personally look for in someone
wishing to assume that leadership.
6. The education of the youth.

Pinky suggested the topic be closed. I responded that we could afford to give it more time to develop into something worth a topic of it's own. Pinky opened A poll which supported waiting, but the topic , from what I can tell, remained a bit stalled.

Then reddeathdrinker suggested a renaming and broadening of the topics general purpose. To such an extent as to effectively change the topic.
Mike seconded it and asked for my input. I agreed and made the change.

The question was asked how the new leadership would be selected, and the suggestion made that the old leadership be maintained. I responded with a recommendation. That nominations be asked for and the an election be held.

SiGmA_X was put forward.

When Rob put himself forward in an effort to either broaden or remind us that an election should be broader, SiGmA_X responded to him in a way I felt unsuitable for one who wishes to gather a team and lead.

I in turn responded in such a way as to point out what I felt to be the deficiencies of his approach. His further sighting of his experiences in the Eagle scouts seemed to me to miss the point.

Which I tried to reiterate by stating:

I would make the following observations:

1.The benchmarking topic is not the failed 3dMarks topic.
2. Being first to arrive is not necessarily a qualification to lead, if it were reddeathdrinker would be the obvious choice and not a bad one at that.
3. To lead is not to control but to facilitate, to make possible the coming together of others in a joint effort to accomplish the undertaking at hand.
4. This cannot be accomplish by belittling those who stand in opposition. Nor by proclaiming ones own qualifications.
5. True leadership can be seen in a willingness to stand aside if this allows the group to move forward.

Pinky has asked the question:

I will try to answer as I believe he asked this of myself.

Concern shows it self first and foremost by asking "what is right"

What needs be done or not done in order to bring about the natural progression of events which will lead to the fulfillment of both the individuals involved as well as the goal they wish to obtain?

This is fulfilled in attempting to gain an insight into the charter and natural predisposition's the people who have gathered. Put more simply:

"How may I best server their needs." "How may I best organize their talents and abilities in order to achieve their ends?"

This concern progresses in it's application by the corrective and shaping influence of the chosen leader. He augments that which is to little and subtracts from that which is to great. He curbs excesses and enhances deficiencies, seeking always to achieve the middle where individual needs are not only subordinated to the group, but the group servers the individual needs.

This is the primary difference between control and leadership.

Control does not really care if the task is accomplished or if those in it's charge are fulfilled in their duties, it merely wishes to establish itself as control.

Someone reading this might easily come to the conclusion that I feel SiGmA_X wholly unqualified or Rob completely suitable. Neither is the case.

Yet to declare oneself more suitable on the bases of skills which so recently met with failure seems to me to lack introspection. Had those skills be sufficient we would not be having this discussion.

It is towards introspection that I moved to steer both Rob and SiGmA_X .

It is perhaps also necessary to point out that mine is but one vote, on voice in this discussion, no more, no less.

Thanks for your clarification. I have no doubt Sigma, though young in the ways of life, is certainly upstanding enough a young adult to handle the daunting task of organizing some numbers and sharing responsibilities.

I also have full faith he will, as I have, learn to let others participate equally and allow them opportunity to grow in their strength areas. .
