Except that they were SUPPOSED to be $100 laptops. Still, I'm not throwing stones; he's at least trying hard to accomplish something.

Sooner or later I'm going to explode, and get all medieval on the Dell Kiosk guy's ass with a rubber chicken.

Notebookreview.com have just posted a news article about the Dell delays:

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3880

Quote:
As students head back to school there might be something missing from their backpacks -- the new Dell laptop they ordered weeks ago. Shipping delays on the new Dell Inspiron and XPS line of notebooks are causing people to wait several weeks longer than they anticipated for their notebooks as Dell keeps delaying existing orders and pushing out delivery dates.

Here at NotebookReview.com we've actually witnessed a 200% traffic spike in our Dell forum for the past 4-weeks, and a majority of that traffic is coming from people visiting the forums to discuss their problems receiving Dell notebooks they've ordered. There were so many posts in our Dell forum concerning this issue, we had to open up a new forum dedicated to Dell shipping questions. So what's going on?

Dell hasn't said much regarding delays on Inspiron notebooks, but they have publicly indicated that they're having trouble with XPS M1330 orders due to quality control issues with such things as the paint job and component supply shortages. It seems this is also occurring with the Inspiron line of notebooks now as well. The Inspiron 1420, 1520 and 1720 are all in sharp demand (good for Dell) and Dell and its suppliers apparently can't keep up with the volume of orders they have received (bad for customers).

To demonstrate the amount of frustration consumers are experiencing with these shipping delays, witness a thread called "Post when XPS M1330 ordered and when/if shipped", it's approaching 9,000 replies to it in the past month, that's far and away a record for our popular discussion forums, and indicative of the number of frustrated customers. Heck, we even have long threads dedicated to XPS M1330 delays broken out by regions: UK M1330 Order Status Thread, European M1330 order progress.

In regards to Inspiron delays, customers are coming up with metrics for what's causing the longest delays on shipments. One forum poster was nice enough to make a post informing others how long their order would be delayed based on the color lid they selected. For instance, here's the breakout for the expected delay if you order an Inspiron 1520:

Black, white = no delays
Brown lid = 5 days extra
Yellow lid = 6 days extra
Blue lid = 8 days extra
Red, green, pink lid = 11 days extra

Want a pink lid? That'll be 11-days extra wait time

So instead of ordering the color lid they really want, people are opting for the black or white colored Inspirons to get the notebook sooner. Other known delays appear to be due to options such as graphics cards.
They have a 9,000 post thread, in a forum that never gets anywhere near that, in one single month, purely dedicated to people such as myself that have been shafted on the XPS M1330.

The bad news though...

1: Its Friday. And due to the fact that the postmen are all murdering communist in this country, they don't work on weekends.

2: Monday is unlikely as it will have just arrived.

3: Tuesday is terrible, as nobody will be available to sign for it between 7AM-9PM

4: Wednesday is a public damned holiday (and said communist postmen are going to hold my laptop up accordingly).

Which means that it will likely be on Thursday that I take off my AMD fanboy T-shirt and Hat, and pull on my new Intel fanboy T-shirt and jockstrap.

So in clarification. Until August 16th, Core2Duo based computers are still rubbish. But ON August 16th, and thereafter, AMD machines are crap, and Core2Duo machines are brilliant.

Its not just an abacus...

Its...

Well if Chuck Norris, Muhammad Ali, and Niki Lauda got together to build a laptop... It would be this laptop.

It should have a sticker on it warning women not to put it directly on their laps, just in case it caused a spontaneous pregnancy. thats how manly a laptop it is.

After all it's not like your going to be worth a damn to anyone at work,...picturing the Mail man knocking on your door, starting to leave, then turning around to give you one last chance to be home before he marks it delivered and gives it to his semi literate 15 year old girl friend toplay with, put pretty stickers on, all like hearts and flowers...

Just stay home.

I would love to, but I have 3 lectures, a microprocessor techniques lab on the day, and a new client server setup that's in the ASAP category scheduled for work that day.

Its just the worst timing...

Or someone simply isn't worthy of a new laptop!

Actually it's refreshing to find people are still capable of putting duty first... Even if they have to be reduced to lackeys of the establishment.....

(Dude your getting a new laptop, no one here is going to cut you an even break!!!)

Incidentally, the last time I had a delivery from Dell, the delivery guy was an African American bloke that had just moved to Australia (this is when I had the first of my 2407WFP monitors delivered), and I went and hugged him at the door. In his thick American accent he goes "Dayum, you Aussies are real friendly people ain't cha?" His sole job was delivering for Dell, so every delivery he had some excited person getting a new computer or monitor, or laptop.

That would be a fairly nice job to have, being cuddled/molested by excited nerds all day.

Well... my boss is a mad nerd, so he would no doubt not mind. He's actually wanting to buy the 2GB of ram off me that the laptop comes with since I'm replacing it with 4GB, so he'd be happy.

But skipping lectures isn't practical when you are doing complicated engineering courses.
