I have an LG L1710B 17" TFT It must be over a year old now and has no dead pixels. It now costs about £100 less than it did when I bought it. The great thing about TFT's, I find, is that you can play dark games like Doom 3 in normal daylight. I have never been able to do that with a CRT, they are just too dim. I find screen geometry and vibrance of colour is superior on a good TFT. There are some pretty naf TFT screens out there so you do have to be careful when buying. The response time of TFT mointors is about to overtake CRTs in a big way. |

hi! i dont know squat about TFT. is it a type of lcd? also, i thought a crt had no response time , so how could a TFT overtake it. and what kind of angle can you view the screan fron? just wondering, cause i know nothing of TFT. thanks!! brian770 |

Yes, TFT is a type of LCD. It's short for Thin Film Transistor. There's an array of TFTs which address each pixel on the screen. CRT and LCD work in a totally different way, so it is difficult to make direct comparisons. Mitsubishi are developing new faster LCDs, see http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18269 |

Viewing angle with a TFT can be as good as a CRT. My Samsung provides almost all-round view with only slight colour distortions. The response time isn't great, but I've never noticed ghosting. Playing Doom 3 on it was fine - you're right about the darkness thing - I guess because the screen is less reflective, you can play darker games in the light. |

part of the thing that makes lcd great to play games with makes them abosolutely horrible for watching movies. and that's the darkness/black level. Alot of people are convinced that lcd's are better, and from a gaming perspective, you're right. Not having true blacks allows you to see little details that are there for a reason in a game, but when you watch a mivie, shadows are generally there to obscure the audience's view of something for whatever reason, or to convey a mood. CRT's are far less expensive, and require less maintenance. LCD's, on the other hand, if properly maintained can last just as long, if not longer, but usually will require and inverter swap-out at some point. i'd rather spend mucho dollars on something else than a display...all that money goes to vidcards, so CRT's are great for me. But i'd much rather have an lcd for gaming, like the NEC with the lexiglass cover like the new shuttle displays...
