The $14.50 mod

Remember that case I bought for $14.50 from geeks.com. I bought it cuz it looked roomy and to prove that you need not spend big bucks on a case. Well as a reminder here is the case. Now take a close look at the floppy/hdd cage cuz it is going to change dramatically and where the rear fan is located is going to get a little modding too. you will soon see that a cheap case is as good as any.

cut cut

Well I have my first weekend off in awhile so I jumped on this Friday night. I thought it was rediculous the way the fan was to mount on the rear so i changed it. I was going to ring it with some sleeving but, it looked like crap! So forget it. More later I am going a million directions at once this weekend trying to accomplish alot!

hole in the roof

Well I decided to go with a 92mm fan in the roof. Instead of going with a grill up there because the vase has a plastic shell over the metal i just deided to slot the plastic.. While I was in the shop I went ahead and cut for a side window also. Oh yes I cut out the window too.
It's all good!

And the beat goes on

I poured it on getting this thing kicked out as fast as possible as my time is just so consumed so far this new year. So it was out in the garage where it is too cold to paint!! So I warmed paint in the house and got out a 500watt quartz light to keep the pieces as warm as possible.
Mean while I drilled out the rivets that held the fdd/hdd cage in place and cut the cage down to hold only the floppy. Then I took an old cage and drilled and screwed it into place to allow for vertical drive arrangement. Then I unpacked my Epox 4PCA3 and my little 2.8C 30 capper and started the assembly process.

Heres the little beige box now!!

Well I was going to just go to bed but, I had to do a little more!!
Hey the paint was dry so I put in the window and slapped it together
I was hoping my vid card would show up in the mail but,it did not!
I have a brand new 7800GS un-opened in the package that I am considering selling so I don't really want to open it just to fire this thing up. I have an ATI Rage fury sitting here. OK I know but atleast it would let me fire it and run it til the little 6200 card I ordered gets here. Remember this will just ocaasionally play some very basic online games
nothing intense so it does not need a power house card. Well back to the case. Bye bye Beige. Mrs. Zilla picked up the paing at first I was a little shocked but I like it!! Well there I will put in the video card tommorow and fire it up. This mod will have less than 2 days in it when it is done.

Nice mod WZ!

I like the color. Would be better if you had used UV paint, and then maybe mod a UV light somewhere on the outside.

Nevertheless, a very nice mod.

Very nice. What is the metal like on this case? Thin and flimsy?

the metal in the case is very stout. the plastic pretty darn stiff too. I liked the room in the case that is for sure. There is plenty of space for a
inside the case liquid cooling system. I could have left the fdd/hdd cage alone as it did not eat up too much room I just don't do stuff like that. I got to cut. I really enjoyed this do it fast mod.

Thanks danrok.........

I now type to you from my new computer!!! The pics I've shot I downloaded directly onto this computer. It is quite fast and smooth.
you know I have wanted to show that a mod need not be a long drawn out affair. If you look closely at the top (blow hole) in this case you will see that it is not as perfect as my usual hole I strarted with my dremel then used my jig saw. Some call it a sabre saw. Why? Cuz many don'rt have my drill press and hole cut saws to put in it. I used my skilsaw
(Circular saw) on the plastic side panel and the window. These saws are common and if you don't have one you must surely know someone who does. Thats it for tools. Well I used a small pocket knife for a little clean up. I did not even lightly sand the edges of the case where I cut gfotr the window. The point? To show that you do not have to have a shop full of tools to create a nice modded case from a very very inexpensive case!! well to the pics. Time for me to celebrate another successful mod and build. mmm so good I think I'll have another
Well that's it no driving for me today!!

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I let the design on the side of the cover dictate the shape of the window. Sam it is folding as I type!!

Nice Weldzilla. Great job for two days and long nights!
You're not going to believe this.... I just started modding mine also and I did the exact same thing with the blowhole on top. I just cut out lines in between the design in a circular shape. Now I'm not so origional, but it shows that we think the same.
Great idea with the rear fan also. I plan to use the plastic mount that came with the case, but thats not a bad idea to mount it your way.
The plastic panels were easy to work with huh?
I'm loving em!
Check out my post when I get it up here and you'll see all the work I'm doing. My goal is a bit larger and it will take me months.
