Smile Getting rid of the Graphics Card HEAT!

This really isn't a Major Mod so to speak but it did make a HUGE diff on the heat in my case and the temps on the graphics card while gaming and overclocking it by -30F!!!

I noticed that when gaming that the graphics card really heats everything up in the case even with the extra airflow by about 4-5 degrees F & the graphic card runs at a average of 172F & this is a HUGE Heat producer...But I fixed this with a slight modification.

This is what I did to vent the hot air directly out of the case from the graphics card!
(Keep in mind, NO holes were drilled or wires spliced!!!)

There's empty addon slots underneath the graphics card so I removed the cover plates and removed the Firewire plugin at the bottom since I never use it.
Then I took SuperLock Fasteners like velcro but better and put a strip of it on the bottom of the 80mm fan & one on the bottom outside of the case in front of the empty slots to where the fan is mounted directly in front of the empty slots.

Fan Specs:
Make: Coolermaster
Size: 80mm
Speed: 2400 RPM (Actual speed reported 2300)
Air Volume: 34.23 CFM (Cubit Feet per Minute)

So now cold air is pulled directly to the graphics card's front radial intake fan from the front case fan & side port & the hot air coming off the rear heatsink of the graphics card is directly exhausted out the back of the case with the extra 80mm fan I added!
I used the empty rear fan header on the mobo to power the extra fan.
This dramatically brought down the temps of the graphics card during gaming by 30 degrees F as well as lowering the overall ambient temps inside the case an additional 4-5 degrees F!!!
You should feel the hot air being blow out by this extra fan! It's like a hot air blow dryer!

Yea...I got all kinds of ideas on modding, but most surprisingly is that they really do work!!! LOL

Yay congratulations for another excellent forum post by me!

And yeah, those sideways blowers are no where near as good as a normal fan in terms of noise/performance or even performance.

I hate to disagree. That one my not move much air, but an axial fan is much quieter and more efficient that a typical radial fan.

Welcome to AOA MUff1N. sounds like a great mod but I can't really see it in the picture. Can you post some more? I wouldn't mind doing some ventilation for the video card so it stays cooler. I've added case fans at the bottom of my cases under the video card to bring in cool air...

Really this is so simple it's stupid really...
As you know with the Nvidia 8800 series graphics card that there is a rear port and vents on the back of the card where the heatsink is.
Most of the hot air is released into the inside of the case through the vent slots above the heatsink and not out the back port. So all I did was put an 80mm fan directly underneath the graphics card where all the heat is being released, (about 2" from the back heatsink vents) so instead of the heat sifting it's way up to the first rear exhaust fan, it now is pulled directly out the back and out of the case. This also pulls cool air directly to the graphics card so that it stays much cooler. I use Speedfan to control it so when I'm not gaming it's spinning at about 1,500 rpm, and when I'm gaming it speeds up to 2300.
This not only cools the card more efficiently, but also keeps the CPU much cooler as well because it no longer has to deal with that rising heat.

The picture is just to show you where I put the fan...

Also, I was going through your forum and found the 8800 and 8800 SLI AOA Club and read and article by weldzilla. I already use ATiTool to overclock my eVGA 8800GTS but wasn't able to control the graphics card's fan speed because none of my tweaking tools detected it to control the speed...but after seeing that he used RivaTuner to do that I download v2.05 & Viola! There is was!!! So I put it at 100% & for the first time "heard" the fan! So I just pulled it back to 80% (at 80% it's quite @ 2287rpm using Everest) up from 60% and this reduced the temps of the graphics card an additional 15-20F!!! So now even overclocking the card under FULL Load while gaming it only gets up to 140 F(60c) and idles at 115F(46c) !!! Woot!!! Just goes to show there's always something else you can learn... Thanks!!!
Before I did any of these mods the average gaming temps of the graphics card was between 180-190F (82-88c)!!! Now I'm sure this card will last until my next Upgrade...

Btw, you guys are funny!!! LOL

PS In Leadtek case the openings are very small what you think of covering them with adhesive tape?

Me think he's refering to you Chris. Duct tape is the foundation of the industrial revolution. Can't see nothing wrong in using it.

BTW Welcome to AOA Muff1n!

If you are talking about the small openings left off to one side of the bottom fan, yea I just took a small piece of tape to cover them so that all the air is being pulled from the inside of the case.
