Temps too high on P4?

I'm beginning to suspect that my application of ASIII was not correct... 1.8A @ 2.4GHz with MCX-4000, 46cfm fan & ASIII with temps around 50'C (under load with S@H CLI) seems too high*. If so, how do I clean ASIII off the heatsink & CPU heat spreader?

* I have yet to install proper case cooling. ATM, I have one 27cfm intake fan in the bottom front of my case but this is partially blocked from ventilating the CPU area by a Voodoo 5. I also have one 27cfm exhaust fan next to the mobo i/o shield.

Welcome to the forums!

What is your case temperature?

50C under full load ain't that bad, actually. If its stable, then its not too hot! (As Holst would say)

How did you apply the ASIII? You would want to apply a paper thin layer, and use a piece of cardboard or a razor blade to spread it onto the IHS.

I put a little ball of ASIII on the P4's heat spreader, 2mm or a little more wide and spread it all over the top of the heat spreader with a credit card. Winbond Hardware Doctor says the "System Temp." is around 40-45'C but I have no idea where this reading is being taken - I haven't put a sensor anywhere. (Mobo's an Abit BE-7 RAID, btw). It may be stable, but I have no way of knowing if the P4's thermal protection is kicking in (skips processor cycles if temp is too high, thus lowering CPU temp).

Try removing the side cover of the case to see what that does to system temperatures.

I don't think you have anything to worry about atm, even if its a little high. My XP at 1826 MHz is hotter than your PIV under full load.

What were your temps before you used the arctic silver?

I started using ASIII when I first got this CPU.

OK. Did you try to remove the side of the case?

T've tried that with the system running. After a few minutes temps go down only by a few 'C.

The hotter the case, the hotter the CPU.

You COULD try to re-do the ASIII part, but if its 45C inside your case the CPU is likely to reach 50C under stress. Couldn't hurt to try though.

Also, is the heat sink flat and completely level? Are there any machining spots on it? You could lap it if it is neccesary.

On a personal note, wouldn't you much rather be running Folding@home than Seti@home? We have a good team of brave folders that could use your help!

I'm already a major cruncher for my S@H team. I wouldn't like to lose that position.

Put it outside then! Run a bit of tumble drier ducting out to the outside world.
Might be worth working on the case cooling a bit?

I'm going to up-rate the existing exhaust fan by the i/o shield and put a 120mm YS-Tech intake fan in the side panel.
