Question about SLK-800 and CPU pads

For all SLK-800 owners you know the pads that Thermalright includes to attach the HS to the CPU, are these really necessary for the TBred chips?

I know on another forum ([H]) some people werent using them with their Pally, chips, but I went ahead and used them anyway, because I was pretty scared of chipping the CPU.

What I am curious is are the TBred dies as fragile as the pallys? And if they arent are people around here using their SLK-800 sinks without the pads?

Thanks

they are primarily to prevent damage during installation and removal

really they are belt and braces. ive never managed to chip a core, but to my knowledge tbreds are as fragile as anything else. Just make sure you dont tilt the heatsink too much when installing it and all should go well.

According to the Thermalright instructions, the pads are to go on the CPU. I have always opted to install them on the heatsink as I may change the CPU before the sink. Here is an illustration for you to show proper placement. RN is absolutely (as always) right. They are for mounting / dismounting only and the cores are just as fragile as any others so beware. This is a very hefty heatsink with a really strong clip. I personally really like it but special care is needed when mounting or removing it.

The next time you have to remove it, put them on! Every little bit helps. Once youv'e crushed a core, there's no going back!
