DO heatsinks have a "boiling point"

I used to run a AXDA1700DUT3C. From 2084MHz @ 1.7v to 2170MHz @ 1.8v the temps would rise 4-5 degrees as read from the mobo bios (8K9A). That was about a 10% increase. HSF was a Volcano 7+.

Now I run a AXDA2100DUT3C. From 2250MHz @ 1.675v to 2334MHz @ 1.775v I only get a moderate increase in temps (2 or so degrees). HSF is now a CAK4-88T with a 80mm x 80mm x 25mm, 5000rpm fan.

Certain heatsinks can only manage to effectively cope with an amount of heat measured in watts. To know what you CPu is producing, heat wise in watts use this formula:

Overclocked Watts = Default Watts * (Overclocked Mhz \ Default Mhz) * (Overclocked Vcore \ Default Vcore

Or enter some info about your processor in here and it'll work it out for you:

http://www.benchtest.com/calc.html

If you look up the spec's of your HSF on the company website it should tell you how many watts of heat it is rated to handle.

Hope this helps,

Craig

HSF have a "saturation" point. I don't know about a boiling point though.

By saturation, do you mean when they can dissipate no more heat?

Soon, I will be writing up the research Ive been doing on Heat Dissipation keep and eye out for it

Thanks,
Craig

yep, they sure do, I once had a heatsink start boiling, covered half my motherboard in aluminum. good thing its not conductive, boy howdy, got myself a cool looking motherboard though.

Lol phat phat, that will tech you for using that heatsink made of low temp solder :P

heatsinks dont have a maximum wattage.

A heatsink can dissipate any amount of heat untill it literally melts or burns.. obviously no CPU will put out enough heat to melt a heatsink...

however as you increase the wattage the heatsinks temperature will increase. At a certain point the heatsink will become too hot to keep the CPU running stable.

My heatsink says it supports a maximum of 100watts on the packaging though. I suppose this is the point where it would become unstable. My heatisnk is t=reated to XP2200+ (1.8GHz) but keeps my 2145MHz 1700+ @ 33*C (with a lot of case fans!).

That reminds me, i bought more case fans to go into my Chieftec today better go stick em in my rig!

LOL, your reported temp is slightly lower than mine, even though I have a prommy.

(now I have reinsulated my CPU temp went as high as 35*c lol )
