Zalman 6000cu...good?

Hey all,

New to the board but not to overclocking...Started with my Pentium 200MMX to my Slot 1 Celeron 350 OCed to 450 with a "celery sandwich"...

Well, I'm awaiting my 8rda+ MB from Newegg and I already have a Barton 2500+, which I plan on OCing, with other components...I've been scanning through the forums and I notice a lot of bashing on the Zalman 6000cu HS. I've read a lot of reviews on this HS (some good, some bad). I would like a quiet computer (right now I have an OCZ Goliath which is FRIGGIN' loud).

Here is the question.

Is the Zalman that bad? And if so, what HS/Fan combo do you recomend that won't kill my wallet and my ears...

Zalman coolers are definately good for silent pcs but they dont seem to achieve low enough temperatures for overclocking from what iv read. There also pretty dang expensive or at least over here they are

Well, quiet is a major issue right now...I don't mind running it stock for a little while but I do want to get the "most for my money". Anyway, I got the 6000 for $32 local so the price wasn't too bad...

Thanks for the reply and I shall continue my quest for the best HSF that can give me silence and a cool CPU...

Well, I got everything installed and did some testing...

With the Zalman 6000cu and my Barton 2500+ @ stock clock, Idle I stay @ 46C and under load (running prime 95 for 15 Min.) <---I know this isn't long enough to get a true reading but I was wanting to play UT2K3 and couldn't wait any longer. , I got about 54C. case temp was between 32C and 35C (i am also figuring out what to do about getting the case much cooler. I know what to do, it's just a time thing...).

What I did to make it this cool, because I was getting warmer temps with the fan that came with the HS, I replaced it with a 120mm evercool fan that came with my previous case. This thing puts out more CFMs at just barely a few more dBs. The computer is still quiet as hell.

But that is not cool enough for me!!! I have won the bid on an Arkua 628 on ebay for $28 shipped USPS 3 day. I've read reviews about this one one frostytech.com and I can deal with the few extra dBs. I think this cooler will be MUCH better than my Zalman.

BTW anyone want to buy a hardly used Zalman 6000cu?

Correction!!!

I just sold my 6000cu for $30 so I just spent $30 for one...kinda.

How quick we are to pass judgement...

eBay, sometimes, is a wonderful thing...

I GOT MY ARKUA 628 TODAY!!!!

WOW!!! What a difference!!!

With the Arkua 628 and my Barton 2500+ @ stock clock, Idle I stay @ 39C and under load running prime 95 for over an hour I got a solid 44C. I did add one more fan (LED of course) to the case and the temp never went above 31C.

This cooler is a little more noiser than the Zalman, but VERY tolerable, and you can't argue this thing just kicks major bootay for $28 shipped...

I would recomend this cooler to anyone who wants a cheap High performance cooler for thier AMD setup.

Time to start OCing...
