Holy fungus Batman !

Hi all,

Had my new watercooling kit running for weeks with no problem. Bought UV dye off Ebay . Very poor results in regard to luminescence , and hey presto, added bonus ( not ) of algae in my tubes . Oh joy !!

Moral of the story : to UV or not UV ..not in my books .

how to clear ?

Hi all,

It`s been suggested to me to put isopropyl alcohol through the system , new water and of course more anti algae fluid . Is it safe to put the alcohol through ?? ( disconnected from the computer of course ! )

Do I need to replace the tubes or can I simply clean and replace them ?

Thanks in advance o watercooling gurus ...

Gerry

I would have thought the best thing to do would be to flush out the tubes thoroughly and just drink the alcohol

Seriously though, I honestly don't know if the isopropyl alcohol could cause any sort of reaction with the tubewall. I found this though. If you do use it be careful.

lol better to drink it ..

Hi ,

Thanks for the advice , Dod , I went back to basics and checked the Asetek manual where it states alcohol is NOT suitable for cleaning the system. Shows how much the dye seller knows ! Isopropyl alcohol is quite toxic if ingested, like methanol , so lol dont do that at home , kids :-)

How often do watercooling users tend to have to change the water ? Hvae I been unlucky in getting algae within 6 weeks of a clean install ?

Thanks,

G

I use "Water wetter" or any car radiator fluid, have never seen a growth, even here in the Pacific Nor west.

Generally, you need to add some corrosion inhibitor to any watercooling setup. This often has the side effect of preventing any growth inside the system.

However, as with all watercooling systems, CHECK THE COMPATIBILITY OF ANY ADDITIVES! Some pumps and seals (mainly plastic and rubber) may be damaged by certain additives, including isopropyl alcohol.

At a guess, I'd say you might have used tapwater and dye as the coolant... That's a good combination for growth of nasties!

Hi guys ,

Was at home for a while and didnt see these posts. Nope Aedan , I used distilled , sterile water from a chemist in the sys build. It`s still a porblem after a water change, mostly due to inacccesible areas within the radiator and pump. I`m going for new tubing and an alcohol wash - for the non corrodible parts - then add yet more anti algae fluid and water wetter. I`m still convinced it was that damn dye !!!

All you have to do is drastically change the pH in the water to kill the algae. Try Vinegar.

Hi ,

Hm interesting ..acetic acid to kill the nasties ! Might be easier to get than alcohol solution. I`ll give it a go ...

Thx ,

Either acetic acid or alcohol will have a similar effect in terms of dehydrating and killing the biological growth. The problem you'll have is actually removing the remains from the tubing. Distilled water on it's own usually prevents biological growth due to it's purity - it basically kills things by overhydrating them.

Personally, I've been using demineralised tap water together with antifreeze, and I've not had any problems.

I would think that anti freeze alone would kill just about anything, at lest I've never had a problem using it...but beyound that I can't say for sure.

most algacides are very toxic. mostly made with
copper sulfide or sulfate. a 10% solution of regular
household bleach and tap water will kill and clean
most any algae. fill and run with distilled H2O and
acquarium de-chlorinator. drain and refill with fresh
coolant. should be good to go for a long time.
