Adventures in decontamination...

Hi all ,

I`ve been troubled with algae in my watercooling setup for a while, ( from bogus UV dye , I think ) .

I had one previous attempt with cleaning using distilled water , but the problem came back.

So what I did this time ..

Removed the whole setup. Flushed everything with regular tap water plus a cleaning agent . Steeped the radiator in Isopropyl alcohol , then flushed the system through with isopropyl alcohol also. Then added 50% waterwetter / 50 % distilled and boiled water through. Emptied the system and filled it with the 50/50 combo again and installed in the case.Let`s see the algae beat that !

A couple of important points :

I used new tubing from Chillblast UK but was disappointed with it. firstly it was NOT the tubing shown on their site from Asetek. It was some generic type that had large imprinted tubing size info on it ..not very aesthetically pleasing ! Secondly and most importantly it was very inflexible ...not good in a confined and busy case like mine .

Secondly ..DO NOT USE ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL ON AN ASETEK KIT ! Their manual states its not a suitable cleaning agent but in desperation I did so . The alcohol attacks certain plastic and I developed some micro cracks in the reservoir. I`m very lucky ..the smart team at Asetek allowed the reservoir perspex to be reversible up/down on its base, hence I was able to invert it, keeping the micro cracks away from the water level. If they had been more extensive, my reservoir would have been a write off.

I wish I had a digicam to take some pix , maybe at a later stage . As for Water Wetter ..well I used it priamrily to make it an unsuitable environment for algae . It makes a pleasant pink froth initially which then settles down. As for temps , well I`m not sure yet, maybe a 1-2C drop in temps, need to see them under load.

Where that leaves me .. hmm well watercooling is better for temps but can have its headaches. Plus keeping the radiator inside the case means higher case temps and a need for good air throughput and cooling. Not bad for quietness ..but now I`m on the long road of saving for a Vapochill :-))
