Koolance Exos Project

I will be installing a new Koolance Exos water cooler in my XP3000 rig.

The DFI board presently installed became faulty, so I have just recieved a new Abit NF7 v2.0.

The Koolance unit should turn up in a day or two. Meanwhile I will get the system back up using the existing air cooler. This is a Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu which is all copper and has a 92mm fan fitted.

I will then take some temperature readings so that I can compare these with the Koolance Exos temps.

I have taken Gizmo's sound advice and tweaked the temperature sensor which is the blue thing in the middle of the CPU socket. This involves bending it upward slightly and applying a small amount of thermal paste to it so that it is more likely to give an accurate reading. It is now raised a little higher that the socket and will bend back down when the CPU is inserted.

I will be using Artic Silver 3 as the thermal paste on both the air cooler and the Koolance CPU water block.

This is the Zalman HSF. I am cleaning the dust out of the fins using a piece of packaging plastic.

I am now having to clean the GPU cooler on my Gainward FX5900U. This is an early model and as you can see the fan used is far from ideal. I only cleaned the dust out of it not so long ago. I won't be buying a graphics card with this type of fan in the future. Although, I plan to use water cooling on the GPU once I am happy with the CPU cooling.

The CPU I will be using is an XP3000 with a 333Mhz FSB and is unlocked as standard, made in week 27 2003. See how I have had to bend one of the capacitors over to fit this fat heatsink. Anyhow, it's in and appears to be sitting correctly.

Next I will put the board back into the case and re-install Windows XP.

The computer is now rebuilt and WinXP installed.

The CPU fan is plugged directly into the mainboard and is running at 2650 RPM.

I have left the machine idle at the BIOS screen and temps have stablised as follows:
System: 22 C
CPU: 43 C
Room: 19C

EDIT: In hindsight the above temps are not the idle temps, I suspect that the BIOS hadn't updated the screen.

CPU core voltage is reported as 1.65v
Memory voltage is reported as 2.62v
CPU settings are default 13 x 166Mhz
Memory is Corsair TWINX1024 PC3200 at DDR333 at default timings 6-3-2-Cas2.0

I will now stress the system with these settings and take some temperature readings.

I will be using SiSoft Sandra for readings.

SiSoft Sandra is reporting the idle temps as follows:
Board: 21 C
CPU: 34 C

I have just benchmarked the RAM bandwidth to ensure that the system is running as it should. Speed is as I would expect, about 2425 MB/s.

Folding@Home has been running for an hour, so here are the load temps:

Board: 25 C
CPU: 45 C

I have now overclocked the system and will get new temp readings.

CPU now at 1.79v
Memory at 1.72v
Chipset set to 1.7v in BIOS.

Memory timings are the same as before.

CPU 11.5 x 210Mhz (2.42Ghz) and memory running at DDR420.
Memory bandwidth is now at the 2945 MB/s mark.

I don't know how much higher it will overclock, but I'll stick with this for purposes of testing.

System became unstable during load testing, so I have backed off to 11.5 x 205Mhz.
This will now be the overclocked settings for temperature tests.

Whilst waiting on the Koolance Exos to turn up I have been following Fpsfreak's Project Silver which is a must see http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...threadid=34558

Idle temps whilst overclocked are:
Board: 23 C
CPU: 35 C

Load temps whilst overclocked are:

Board: 27 C
CPU: 50 C

So, that's completes testing with the Zalman cooler. The real fun will start once watercooling is installed.

The watercooling block is out of stock with the supplier, so I will just have to wait on the Koolance Exos. I'll update just as soon as I have all the kit here.

I'm sure waiting in this case is easier for me than it is for you! Have you tried other retailers?

Suppliers of Koolance kit are thin on the ground in the UK.

Daniel, which CPU blocks do you use with your Koolance units?

Just the AMD XP and 64 bit waterblock. I don't overclock Video cards as I can't afford to lose them. I'm still on a 4600Ti so really don't need more in the way of cooling than Leadtech supplied it with.
