Don't know if it's any help but I have a Barton 2500 with a TT Volcano 12 Extreme and the thermal probe sits right in the middle of the underside of the cpu, in the area surrounded by the pins. It's taped down with a thin piece of the tape provided.
The initial section of wires from the probe are so thin they sit easily between the pins before they are surrounded by heavier and thicker insulation.
If this does help be sure you position the probe so that the wires don't foul the locking mechanism and come out in the position you want them to!
Alternatively tape the probe to the bottom edge of the heatsink close to the mobo - not the base!!!! . It apparently only varies in temp by 1 or 2 degrees
