This type of fan is also commonly refered to as a 'squirrel cage' fan, because of the way the blower is designed. Basically, it's an impeller for air. They are very efficient, but suffer in application use because air doesn't flow straight through them; rather, air is exhausted at right angles to the intake path. However, when you can make use of them, they are really hard to beat.

Yes, there are some situations where this type of fan is better than the straight-through type.
