cooling CPU/GPU

I just installed a Zalman CNPS7700-CU on my cpu (intel 3.0ghz northwood) but i didn't install the fanmate under the asumption that using a direct connection will yield best performance automatically, in other words the fan will be running on "high setting" all the time. am i wrong?
i currently have idle temp of 39C, isn't that a little high?

Another thing, I was considering changing the fhs on my video card (xfx 6600 gt). Im not a hard core gamer but like to play farcry when i get the crave. would it be worth it to replace the stock fhs on my video card? how significant will be the improvement?

system:
intel p4 3.0ghz northwood
1G ram
asus p4p800-e deluxe
1 x 80G ide
1 x 120G SATA
2 x 147G SCSI
1 x dvd burner
1 x cd burner
adaptec SCSI controller
xfx 6600GT video card
Hauppauge PVR 150-mce
antec 400w ps

Very little improvement. Drivers will make a much bigger difference. What Nvidia drivers are you currently using? We have the TweaksRUs.com XG 77.62 set available on AOAFiles.com here http://files.aoaforums.com/code.php?file=2152'

Those will give up to a 20-30% performance improvement over the drivers on the CD that came with that card, and are better than the current drivers out.

Not using the fan mate, means that yes, its running at full speed all the time. The fan mate is just an in series variable resister (pot) on the +12V wire. Not using it gives the full +12V so its as good as it will get.

39C is fine. Its stable up to 70C or so, so theres heaps of room there. Even my Athlon 64 idles at 43C.

ok thanks

ok thanks, i do have those drivers installed, i saw your post before and grabbed them right away.

just one more question. i have my card overclocked to 550mhz core and 1.10ghz for mem. when i run 3dmark05 tests they run ok with no glitches on the screen, but when i play farcry close to or over 1 hour i see green glitches on the screen. i am curently using medium video settings at 1152x864 resolution.
is it because im overclocking or because my card just can't hold it and i need to use low video settings.

thanks

You are pushing your memory clock a bit too hard, sounds like. Try backing off just a bit.
