Applying AS5 To CPU, Video Card, and Northbridge

OK, Ive just bought a new video card cooler, Artic Silencer 2 for my 9600XT. Im curious, how much thermal paste do I apply, and do I cover the entire thing, including the silver core border, or just the black core itself?

Ive bought a new northbridge cooler also, which in itself, is going to be a pain to install, as I have to pull the motherboard out to remove the put pins. but oh well. My question is, how do I remove the previous paste? As well as, do I cover the entire chip, or the silver circle part of the chip in the centre (VIA K8T800 chipset).

Would it be warranted to attach my old nrothbridge cooler to the southrbridge?

And I think I should have some AS5 left over, so I think I should re-paste the CPU. So, I would like to know, do I cover the centre of the CPU, or the entire surface area?

Lastly, in a tutorial I read on the net somewhere, it says you should put thermal paste on both the heat sink and the chip. Is this correct?

I'd only apply AS on ONE thing. You are looking for heat conduction not insulation.

Meaning, apply it the the chip itself. OR the heatsink, not both?

Take the cotton off the end of a Q-tip and use that to spread a nice thin layer....dont use anything metal.

However in the instructions it will demonstrate how much to use for your GPU/RAM, I used a very thin layer on the RAM and not too much more on my core.

As for your graphics card just apply the AS to the bore, should have ATi written on it, the metal boarder of the chip is just to stop it getting damaged. Just put a tiny blob on the core and smooth it down to the thickness of a peice of paper, REALLY thin!

Before you put any new thermal compound down you need to thoughly clean the area (Noting that yoyu should be following good anti stactic precautions) You can clean the area with isopropyl alcohol.

because in doing so, you can end up introducing things that dont aid in conduction but insulation, eg. the oils from your skin aint good and fibers of material. Its just good practice. Plus AS aint good for you!

AS is a pain to wash out of anything, including your skin. Take it from me.

You should apply about a rice grain worth of AS to your CPU, so proportionatly from there for your other chips. That rice grain amount is enough for both CPU and HS.

You only want to smooth out the rough bits, too much will act like an insulator.

Be very very careful when using AS on video cards and chipsets, you really don't want even the slightest amount getting anywhere other than the surface contacting the heatsink, if you accidently get any on the pcb or the core substrate, clean it off properly before you test the card

I'm gonna need to apply some AS to my CPU and GPU, in the near future. Anyone got any AS paste they can send me?
