Usually you need access to a lump of copper and a good mill.

Dont take this the wrong way, but save yourself some hassle and buy the CPU block. For a rad I'd suggest a Heatercore rather than an oil cooler, the heatercore has far more surface area. Can be obtained from your local car breakers yard, make sure its copper and brass though, usually from an old car.

Pond pumps are ok, but you may find your CPU block requires a good pump for best performance so research this carefully.

That is true, as I'm an engineer I have free access to mills, lathes and many other things that make life easy when working with metals. But to start with Al or Copper can be used, I used 2 pieces both 8mm thick X 80mm X 55mm most engineering workshop would have scrap Al in there bins and would give it to you. Copper is harder to find cheapest way I found to get small amounts for making CPU blocks is to buy replacement heads for what is called a soft faced hammer, most have a copper face and a plastic face, copper face around 55mm diameter AU$22 approx. That is a good starting place.

...just remember its going be be pressurised in there....and hot...for far more than 24hrs testing....amongst all your expensive PC hardware.....It maks sense to just buy a decent waterblock, you will be very hard pressed to make anything better and more reliable.

Please let us know how it works out. How are you planning to clamp it down onto the CPU?
