Two fans on HSF

Has there been any kind of consensus as to the merits of having two fans on a cooler, Maybe what set-ups work best and what are flops?

Depends on the design of the cooler. If it's designed for two fans, then odds are it can benefit from two, and the manufacturer will have given instructions on how they should be mounted.

If your HSF is designed for one fan, though (as most are) then you'll likely see a DECREASE in performance if you stack them; the absolute best you'll see is no change.

Many servers use ganged fans (two stacked together) not for improved airflow, but for redundancy so that if one fan fails, the other can continue to push air until the failed fan is replaced.

I've been trying different push-pull cofigs. I have the stock fan 120mm 1200rpm max and one of those compaq fans-90mm 4200rpm. I'e been swithing each from push to pull and I've basicly come to that conclusion -I'm loosing ground, back to stock-no, lets see what that 90mm does by itself-it does move air.

Even if the 90mm does move more air, it does so over a smaller surface area. So I think it won't work as well as a 120mm which covers the entire surface area thus better cooling.

If you were to put a 120mm fan that moves more air on it THEN it will cool better. This is the fan I put as my intake fan & it moves a TON of air!!!

I'm going to look into that-got a few things to do and then wipe this drive for a clean install-to many errors are starting to pop up and a lotof programs and hardware has moved thru-start clean! Just takes a day or so and what else have I got to do? Besides it sure runs sweet for a while!

What you need to do PPM, is get Acronis True Image & make a backup image of your OS partition as soon as you got all your drivers & updates installed & Know your OS is running perfectly!
This will save you a ton of time when doing a "clean" install.
Instead of a 1/2 a day it takes reinstalling everything it only takes about 3 mins to install the backup image!
You can burn the image to a regular DVD-R too if you like. That's what I did as another backup in case the HD fails that the image is stored on.
I like redundant (failsafe) backups of my data...

Recently found seagate disk manager uses acronis - and is free (if you have seagate disks). Agreeing with Muff1n - such a godsend for time saving

Here is one of those things that ya kick yourself over-even if at the time it was the thing to do.
I've beliee I have Acronis True Image in one of my boxes somewhere. I do remmember look into the idea of it and then reading it took like 10 to 15 disks (it was probly Norton! lol) and I caned that idea. It's a little late now.or just the right time deopending on how you look at it-I think I'll go looking thru somr boxxes.

Back about 5 years ago it was that way but not anymore.
Now Acronis is extremely efficient & fast!!!
My OS partition is 40Gbs & it takes me all of 3 minutes to do a complete backup.
To restore your backup varies on the time it takes depending on the speed of your processor, FSB, memory & HD speeds. But for me it takes 10 minutes.
A lot faster than installing from scratch heh?

Best of all is the storage size of the image. For 40Gbs the image takes up 7Gbs! So you can store redundant backups. I always have 4 on hand. 3 current backups on my storage drive & 1 on a DVD.

The reason it's taking 7Gbs now is because I have all of my programs installed with the OS! Without the programs it only takes up about 2.5Gbs so it easily fits on a standard DVD.
You can either use Acronis to burn the image to a DVD OR you can use Nero Burning Rom. This is what I use (Nero) & they are perfect backup copies!
I also have a current Backup of my OS partition with all my programs included that's burned to a DL-DVD.
This is a HUGE time saver as well as a system's saver when it comes to something Horrible happening to your OS like OCing to high & corrupting you systems folders LOL.
But not to worry, within 10 mins it's back to normal like nothing ever happened!
So you say, but what if your system is totally unbootable? This is where your Rescue disk comes into play & you bootup off of that then access your image & restore it... so you just kick back & drink a beer while you wait & let Acronis do it's thang...

I Have always just had my programs on another partition or HD and installed as I wanted. the way I did things, I was always doing a new instal. every month or two.
I just tried the bacck up in win 7and I don't like that.
I'm Going to try Acronis next . I've learned that if MUFF!N sas it's good. Listen . and then Use it.
Good luck!

Yeah I use Acronis for my own personal usage as well as at work for various purposes. By far the best app for its purpose I have come across.
