I am missing something!

I am missing something. The temps I'm getting with the EVGA 780i Ultra in the new mod aren't worth beans either! I did everything I know-to the best that i know and my temps are still in the toilet!
I removed all heat sinks, cleaned them and the chipsets with alcohol and put it all back together useing Arctic Siver Ceramic, nice and thin. This is with jus both folding clients-no OC!
I used to get this with folding,& 4.00G OC.
Maybe I need to go back to baby steps-I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm disgussted!
I'm haveing to Add fans!

removing the heat from the chip is one thing, you still have to get the heat away from the cooler and board. Even with water cooling i have several fans moving air through my case.

I know you don't want to here this, but the problem is the case.
If you want optimal cooling you need a case that is designed for it with the correct fan placements for the needed airflow.

My case is a very good example of optimal airflow.
Everything stays nice & cool in the case except during the hottest parts of summer when the ambient room temps are 85F or higher.

Below is the way my case is currently setup for airflow with more exhaust fans than intake, but I do have a front & side vent allowing for more air to be pulled in.

Front intake: 1-120mm fan 40-110 CFM (depending on speed)
2-Empty drive bays with screens for air intake.
1-side vent air intake.

Internal: 1-120mm fan blowing over NB & RAM @ 32 CFM.

Top-1 80mm exhaust fan @ 35 CFM.

Rear Exhaust: 2-80mm @ 70 CFM together.
1-80mm fan to exhaust graphics card heat @ 35 CFM.
PSU-1 140mm fan

Current temps @ 3.40GHz with 75F ambient room temps.
EIST & C1E disabled.

Sam & Muff!n,
There wasn't any point in quoting both of you! I agree !00% My first mod-The Full tower I still have was designed very simular to your drawing Muffin.
Things have changed a little The size of the video cards I belive has been the biggest challenge to air flow in the "old style box".
My mod is far and away from that. your firs comment, sam was the amount of ventalation it had.
The first power up had 3 fans-PSU-drawing air from the bottom and exiting thr rear-nohelp for that one.
As the pics show board is inverted with a 120mm variable fan on the back side of the cooler blowing foward, then the GPU fan which I have set to 100% blowing forward-1 more 40mm (?) SPP fan blowing foward.
I hav since added a 120mm fan in a push-pull configuration-I've learned it gives me another 3 to 4c. I've added an 80mm (back to front) but mainly at an angle across the backside of the vid card because its' so hot, that is with EVGA precision at 100% fan.
Your first comment, Sam, was how much ventalation this has.
I'm thinking the only other would be one behinf the drives but they are right at that front door-what is the point?
But something isn't right-so if you guys say ad fans-on Wednesday this thing will hover a foot off the floor! I just don't see it.

The only thing I have to add is it looks like the GPU heatsink is filled with dust, dirt, hair, etc to be that hot with the fan set @ 100%!
That's just not right even at full load.

Might consider taking the cover off & taking a look see inside to see if the heatsink is clogged up on your graphics card.

The hottest mine gets at full load OCed by 30% is 70c in the middle of Summer.

You guys are vindicated. I put one fan [ I think it's an 80mm but it's 2 1/2 in thick! ] In the bottom blowing fwd beside the drives. The results show for them selves. I'll also take a look at the vid card.
Next month, a little planning will go into getting a couple of case fans and a controller. This one moves more air than a 120mm but itt's a noisy SOB!
Notice the memory. i had a stick of G.skill go bad. I have no Idea when, where, or how, I got them. No papers of coarse. I emailed G. Skill saying that-I got an RMA # yesterday!
But ,weak soul that I am, the thought of a couple of weeks behind the laptop agian made me shudder so I picked up a 2 GB stick of corsair-
I havent't tested yet-prep for that starts as soon as I mail the G Skills.

Wink

Believe this or not but my case cools everything inside much better when it's closed up than open!

Reason being is that cool air is drawn in the front & side & hot air is expelled out the back & top.
This doesn't happen with it open as there is no air pressure (negative or positive) inside the case to move it from point A to point B.
And Yes, the 120mm blowing over the NB & RAM made a BIG diff on their temps by 20F!

I cleaned out the vid card. what a mess!
I know you do things differently-he** everybody does- but My hardware is almost right. My software has suffered getting here. It's going to be a little work in the drive set up-put a litte space between them- and secure the DVD. Then a clean install & maybe a backup! Smooth as a babies butt!

EDIT:
Untill next month and then I'll do it agian with th 790i. Guy at the local computer shop said he had repaired a number of 775 sockets with bent pins. He agreed, from what I told him, that was the problem an $10 to fix so we start agian next month!

What's the graphic card's temps now that you cleaned out all the stuff clogging it up?
I'm sure it's much better, has to be!

I was so into the fact that everything ran stable, I didn't look. I just did and I don't like it. Both Speed fan and Everest have it at 69c. I think I'll try a different version of EVGA Prececision-I might have a bad one or something. Instead of the v1.7.1 I'll back down to a Vista version-see what happens.
first to the EVGA forums!

Well considering it was at 91c, that is a big improvement on temps!

I am at a loss a what to do next. I stripped the card down, cleaned the HS's ( about 20!) You should have seen the main HS, copper but the machine marks were so bad i looked like a reke across soil. I only spent about a half hour on it but there was a big improvement over when I started. I used Arctic silver on the GPU and the small chips outboard but in a semi-circle around the GPU are 8 chips that they use a strange compound on. I'll ask later what it is. On the 9800GT it was dried up and crusty and I thought I had the problem solved. I tore down the 9600 an they were like 1/8 in latex only softer. They pealed off and stuck well to the chips on the 9800GT.
But none of did any good! This is just F@H - No OC at all.

It may just be a hotter running GPU or the heatsink isn't as big as the one on my card...I don't know, just guessing is all.

Is this a single slot card or does it take up 2 slots like mine does. Mine has the bigger fan/heatsink on it that exhausts out the top & back so it stays much cooler I think.

Mine's like yours but I believe I've found the problem, just not how to fix it. On the first try-I assumed they used thermal tape on the chips around the GPU-10 of them-and like I said another 10 or so little ones out board- Everything said to aply compound, bolt it together-fixed!
Didn't happen so went to ask more questions at the EVGA forums.
One guy remembers another guy that had the same proplem ad it's not thermal tape on the chips but thermal pads-doing double duty as thethickness & pressure guage for the GPU. He remembered they were very hard to find and even harder to find so they would fit.
So I hve spent the afternoon forum shoping-the ones I have. now I'll start Googleing
It wouldb e nice to get my PPD back to 6k and better!

This is the best I've been able to do right now. Not happy but at least I've got both folding clients and OC. I'm not going to say what I did to the vid card-being shot isn't one of my favorite pastimes!
And the MCP temp has gone up agian.

Just because you said that about your graphics card, I now have to know what you did!
If you didn't say that my curiosity wouldn't have been peeked!

Check your in box. This idea didn't quite work but the next one will!
It seems to run ok at 70c but I don't like it. I just don't run the GPU client to often.
I think I have the 790i ready to test but that means pulling PetCarrier ll apart. That's when some changes are going to be made. I've got everything but Mareens wheel chair on Craig's list-I want an aftermarket cooler for the 9800gt. Even though the mobo tray is inverted and hung from the top-I see know that in not planning for at least one blow hole was a mistake. I think I can get two 80MM to go in after cutting holes in the tray- the trick is in the placement and how to make them look good too. I won't be able to asses that until I get it tore apart.
