Cool. I can get a 2'x3' sheet of galvanized for cheap. Was planning just to use it for the shrouds on my RAD. May still, but now this idea is really brewing....:-D

Talking Hey Guys

Why not get a heater matrix out of a scrap car..... the newer ones are copper piped but have plastic surrounds... they are very light and about 12 " square... and with a 12 volt fan from the same car this should provide a better cheaper solution to cool down the water..........

Just my thoughts on the matter....

Flack ...

Using things like the radiator block or an oil cooler from a car is a great way of getting a cheap, well designed radiator, if you're lucky.

Just watch for a few things:
* Leaks - very few car rads (in the UK at least) are copper 'cos its so expensive. The more "luxury" class car uses an aluminium block, but yer average skip on wheels uses good old carbon steel. Works just fine, but has probably rusted through.
* Contaminants - just be sure to clean it through with isopropyl alcohol, especially if you're using an oil cooler. Last thing you want is a tar-ball gumming up your pump
* Galvanic reaction - if you do end up with an iron block, there are a number of additives that will suppress galvanic corrosion. The cheapest and most readily available is car antifreeze. Note: there are 2 types. Ethylene glycol for iron, and summat else for Aluminium.
* Bugs - cleaning dead flies out of a radiator is a pain

But yeah, if you get a good'un, it's a cheap and easy way of getting a decent block.

Yeah, I know that heater cores make good rads. Didn't know about the oil coolers, but I think that there is just a feeling you get about building your own. I didn't build my first one, I'm using the DD Cooler Cube. But I've been thinking about adding a 2nd rad, and building might be fun!
