Looking for a good hsf

Hey guyz
i'm runnin an Athlon 1700 stock on an AZZA KT3-AV board and i have an ABIT KT7A Raid board i'm gonna switch to oc my 1700. I'm looking for a good hsf that'll cool my cpu but not give me a headache with the fan noise. I've already got the Volcano 7 which i'm using now and it's not bad. Got the probe deep in the heatsink and my cpu temps @ idle are 29c, fan speed around 3500, @full load it's 33c, fan @ 4300. My case temps are around 22c.

Can any of you guyz recommend something?
Very much appreciated !

Your temps are nice, I don't see a reason to upgrade if you are happy with the Volcano...

However, I can recommend the Millennium Glaciator II, its a good HSF with tolerable noise.

O/C has a very nice HSF table here:

It should be of some inspiration to you.

If the Volcano you have is too loud, try setting it to 7volts instead of 12v. It will make it go quieter (but performance drops as well).

To get 7v, use a standard hard drive power connector (A Molex). Connect the fan using the red molex wire AND the yellow molex wire (one for each of the fan's wires), so you don't use the two black wires in the middle of the molex.

Deltas of 7c & 11c?? If the numbers are reliable, I think you are doing REALLY good. Any temp under 40c is considered excellent for AMDs.

Thanx Allan & steve for the great info. I'm pretty satisfied with the volcano7 but i'm not sure if it'll hold up on an oc. I just wanna be safe than sorry.Maybe i should open up my xp1700 and then see if i need a new hsf. You think that's a good idea, or should i just go ahead and buy it? At least i'll have it on standby just in case.

Thanx again gentlemen

Allan's links are excellent. If the reported CPU temps are accurate, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and OC the processor. If the temps are then ugly, it's time to get a beefier HSF.

New York gets a wee bit toasty in high summer. Don't be too surprised if your enviable temps become a thing of the past, even at "stock."
