Drive sink contact

I've got me an aluminum sink that I'm going to use for a drive sink. It's just the perfect width to use on a 3.5inch drive but the length is about an inch or two too long. Once I've got that trimmed I'm going to lap the bottom and then mount it. I'm thinking of using standard white goop for transfer paste but I'm not sure about one thing. The paper lable on top of the drive will make it an uneven surface to mount the sink onto. I'm not going to remove the paper label so I'm wondering if that will make any difference? I'm planning to put the white goop on the rest of the drive but not on the part where the paper label is and then have either epoxy or super glue on the corners holding the sink on. The sink will be cooled on the top by a 92mm 48cfm fan. So does anyone think that having the paper label in there will be of any significance? I know the drives are meant to run without any drive cooling but we see more and more that modern drives just aren't living up to that standard. My Maxtor died after 1 year. My Seagate died after 4 months! I don't want this Seagate to go in 4 months too. Does anyone have any suggestions they think might be helpful?

Re: Drive sink contact

I believe that most of the heat is actually generated by the electronics, and the spindle motor. If this is true, then attaching a big heatsink to the top of the drive will be pretty ineffective, as it's literally just a lid (normally a thin bit of steel).

Removing the heat from the main body of the drive would be more effective, but I'm not sure how you would do that. Removing the heat from the electronics would be good, but still leaves the heat generated by the spindle motor.

Nice idea but no can do. The Barracuda's have a padded protective layer on the circut side to protect the drive from having things chipped off. The top side is the only way to go. and some of the top side does get hot so having a sink will probably help some. It may not be the best idea but it can't be worse than doing nothing so I'm going to give it a shot.

It's sounding like the best way to cool this Seagate is to blast it with an ~80mm, from a short distance. While other's report that the Barracuda IV's get hot, I have not found this to be true. At least in comparison with 75GXP's.
