My Computer Doesn't Work, at all.

Well, i fecked up real bad this time. I went to install a new hard drive a couple of weeks ago. Plugged it in, and the computer didn't boot. I took it out and the computer still didn't boot. I have a problem. It hasn't booted for ages and i have tried everything i know. I've tried cleaning it, unplugging and replugging everything, i don't know what to do next.

Any help????

This suggestion is idiocy, in and of it's self, but I did it a few times, so maybe you did it too..

If your ide and floppy headers on the mobo are not "shelled" (If they don't have a plastic shell arround them..) Check to make sure you didn't flip them, plug them into only 1 row of pins, or exclue two pins at one side.

No, I don't think you are stupid... just ruling out the simple stuff.

Also, try a different PSU, and known good IDE and floppy cables.

If you have a PCI winmodem in there, try pulling it. (I had one that would install fine, but not allow the computer to boot afterwards.)

Does the power come on or does it just not make it thrue post. If the power doesn't come on then strip the motherboard down to just video card 1 strip of memory and see if the power comes on.

If the power supply doesn't even come on. Remove the PSU, keep it plugged in the AC wall outlet. Jump the ATX cable's green wire(think it's number 14) to one of the black wires(ground) with a momentary switch. Put a multimeter between the +12V(yellow) harddrive molex and a ground wire(black).

This will test to see if the PSU is good or not. If the PSU fan doesn't start up when you try this, check to see if your getting 12V on the multimeter.

If you get no PSU fan and no 12V then the PSU is junk, pitch it and buy a new one.

If you get no PSU fan but do get 12V, the PSU needs a new fan, and your boot problem lies elseware.

Will it boot if you put the old drive in?
