fatal exception 08

can anyone please help?
immediately after installing adobe reader 6, flash 6, and shockwave 7, I tried to shutdown and got a bluescreen message:-
"fatal exception 08 at 3246:00000028". ever since then, I cannot shutdown at all.
the only action possible at the bluescreen is to use the reset button, and then pull the plug just before everything starts to load on screen again.
I reverted the drive to before installation of these programs (using Ontrack's GOBACK)- but still get the same fault now.

Welcome to AOA Forums, scot!

Nasty problem! I suggest dumping Acrobat Reader 6, it's a turkey. Good old version 5 is better. If you reboot after installing each of these programs, the culprit will be ID'd.
It's good to shut any AV or Firewall prog down before installing any software. They all suggest that running the least amount of programs as possible is a good idea when installing new software. Once in a while I follow the suggestion.

many thanks for your advice, cloasters, I will have a look at that.
didn't know Reader 6 was inferior, or giving problems - but mine certainly started immediately after installing it.

Hi, surlyjoe. sorry for delay in answering.

very occasionally it will come up in safe mode when resetting. it will shut down normally then from safe mode.

The wonderful complexities of MS's OS's. The problem might be that some of MS's Critical Updates are beneficial. Others break something while they fix another problem, and some of them aren't good at all. As MS says that they are all necessary and good, you can't get the truth from them.

Maybe this is interfering with the quality of your PCing experience.

Ah! A man after me own heart! Not to be taken literally, ye edjumacated ones. I insist on the very longest hat pins. If you have to swipe them from Granny, so be it.
