big crash

i have just had a virus called 'fizzer' and what a little sod it was,in the end the only solution i found was to format..!!!
now my machine is as slow as a snail and ive lost every thing i have built up over the last two years...(somebody say backup)

anybody else had this,i found a fix for the win98 version but not the xp version so a format was all i could do,

it removed the following files,

HIMEM.SYS
DBLBUFF.SYS
IFSHLB.SYS

im also told it has the power to remove antivirus software,
i had zone alarm and two other working at the time and it didnt stop it.

BE ON THE LOOK OUT.!!

Man I'm sorry! I don't think there can be many who start out backing up! We all learn from the school of hard knocks!!

No we don't.

Not all of us anyway.

Some of us just get the art of repartition, reformat, reinstall, and reload basic software, down to less than 2 hours.

ZoneAlarm isn't an antivirus program, so won't detect viruses as such. What it can do is alert you if an unrecognised program tries to access the internet, either setting itself up as a server, or trying to connect to other machines.

Additionally, if your antivirus software is not up to date, it won't be able to catch any viruses beyond the last time it was updated! Unfortunately antivirus software has to be told about new viruses, which is what the updates do. An out of date antivirus program is worse than no antivirus program at all!

Thanks for the heads up, That wasn't a real big update virus definition-wise, but it took a minute or two and I have broadband. Maybe their server is running slow or it updated some of the other features as well.

Geting the update is good preventative medicine, running a full system scan right afterward is the next step.

Be aware that even if you do backup your system, it is pointless unless you go about it the right way. A simple file copy to another HD isn't enough on it's own. Damaged and infected files will be duplicated in the copy.

Use a good backup program!
