Win XP Crashing....whats the cause?

Evening all.
My Epox rig has started to throw up some anomalies. Over the past 3-5 days I've noticed that Win XP has started crashing unexpectedly. The screen goes black and the desktop returns in Safe Mode with the message that "...Windows has recovered.....save and reboot"
I've not installed much recently on it and I dont really fancy re-installing it, its been going for about 18 months about 10-15 hrs a day.
Any pointers on what to look for?

Laz.

You tried swapping out any parts? Video card, maybe? When my Ti4600 bit the big burrito it would freeze on games and finally began giving me the hardware errors any time I tried to force it into anything with 3d. Fried a Maxtor 40g one time and it gave me similar errors before making some kind of weird grinding PING sound and then dying completely.

Yep. did a virus scan an dnothing came up. Rebooted the machine and she's been fine since my last post, over 2 hrs ago. Been running normal load, winamp, web browsers etc but not folding. Strange, I'll see if it only happens when the Pc is first booted up or whether its F@H?
Now running F@H...fingers crossed!

Have a look at the board and check if any caps are starting to show any signs of swelling or leakage.

funyy...everything under the sun almost has been mentioned....yet...
personally, i think you're working on a tinker in FAH?
your clocks are too high if this is the case.
tinkers will up the power comsumption of a cpu greatly...mine regularly runs @ 183watts. that's one hell of an amount of power for just the cpu....at which point i bet your psu is overworked. This would explain why you've only had crashes while folding. IMHO...
i have a cheapy antec 350 that provides more stable power than my current Tt Butterfly, but once i get overclocking, things go bad. i tink normal power comsumption for a cpu dhould be abt 120-140w...i'm sure giz will correct me. so i'm drawing in the very least 40w more than stock...

Hmmm...weired. Since my last post I hadn't had an incident, then just now as I was reading cadaveca's post it crashed! BAH!

Gizmo, I dont have the guts to do any ERP's!
Dod, caps are fine and dandy.
sasrob, Antec Trupower 300W, Watercooled CPU + case fans. I dont think its temp related.

Maybe I'll just back up everything, format and reinstall this weekend.

Laz.

...so, I'm just messing around and the PC crashes again, but this time it wasn't too bad and I managed to take a screen shot of my "new" desktop. Is it the AGP card on its way out?
I cant get the desktop back to normal without rebooting, but the PC is behaving like "normal" in this state, ie only the desktop is affected, other windows are ok.
Drivers?

Well, one reformat later and the same thing is happening, PC crashes to Safe Mode with the message that Windows has recovered from some hardware failure.
Could it be: Motherboard, Graphics card, SB Live card, NIC? Thats all I've got plugged in other than Memory and CPU and HDD?

i still say it's your underpowered psu...you've got alot of stuff in there.
check and make sure you're pci/agp frequencies are locked....a recent bios update to my board disabled this feature.
