Cant Burn Cds

my dad's computer has stopped being able to burn cds through windows. its the only way he knows how and hes not willing to learn another cd-burning program.

the drives can read cds just fine, just when it comes to burning, the cd-rw all of a sudden says that it does not detect the disk.

this is somekind of windows problem, it worked fine the last time he burned something.

i will try burning a cdr, if that dosent work, then the $16 cd-rw drive is broken, unless someone on here can tell me how to fix it.

This is not completely on topic, but it does have to do with Windows and CD-R burning. When I first got XP, I was excited that the operating system included its own CD burning software. However, I soon noticed that Windows seemed to take a share of the space on a CD for itself. For example, when trying to copy a CD (disc 1 of Metallica's S&M album) to a CD-R, Windows told me that there just wansn't enough space on the CD for the files. Well, I just booted up the old burning program and sure enough there was plenty of room for the stuff I wanted to put on it.

Have you tried to show him ez cd creator? I know parents are stodgy and don't like to learn new things, but, it really is easy.

Right click the drive and check that it has the properties page in this image and that the settings are the same. If it doesn't then I'm not sure this would definately work but disconect the drive (just remove the power conector) boot windows makesure the drive is gone then power down connect it again and let windows detect it again this worked on my parents cd writer when xp forgot it was a writeable device

XP has a bad habit of forgetting what devices can do. Go into device manager, delete the device, then reboot and let it be re-detected.

If I use XP's method of burning a music CD audio glitches appear, usually after the sixth track. It's probably MS's way of not letting you burn copyrighted material that's good enough to sell it. Maybe.

i use nero 6, but when i was on my parents com once i had to use ms's burning prog to add some stuff to a disk with data on it already. about 1.5 seconds into the burn process, microsoft said there was a 'serious error' burning the disk, and it 'may no longer be usable' fortunately nothing on the disk wasnt also on my own computer.

It's said that you can't go wrong with the Roxio burning software.
