Error w/ Windows Update

I reformated my comp and need to run windows update as i installed xp pro version 2002 and i know there are tons of updates. so i run windows update and it said i need to install new windows update software. so it started downloading and after it got to 67% i went to eat diner. 20 mins later i come back and it says its at 100% and registring. so after about 5 more mins when it does nothing else, i close the ie window and run windows update again. its says:

Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click Install or Yes to install the software.

and it sits there for until i close it. ive restarted my computer, and thats about all i can think of to do. plz help

just download sp2 redistribute and install it manually

well i dont think im gonna download it with aol, but i did order the disk.

Are you close to a BestBuy? SP2 on CD is free for the asking. Probably the same at other major computer/electronics outlets.

if im near one ill pick it up. otherwise ill just wait for the copy i ordered from microsoft (also for free) to get here.

Try this:

Click Start > Run >
Type (or copy & paste) the follow command in the Open box.

net.exe stop wuauserv

Press OK

Repeat the same for the following, one at a time:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart your computer and try Windows Update again.

I don't remember when I stumbled on that little procedure but it's written on a slip of paper in my bag of tricks. I actually had to do the same thing yesterday...on one of my own computers!

In any case, I'm glad it worked out for you.
