Unhappy Burning smell from motherboard.

While I was playing a game of Battlefield Vietnam my Athlon 64 motherboard (Chaintech VNF3-250) made a really bad smell like it was on fire or something.

I restarted shortly and my on-board ethernet didn't work (the only thing not working as far as I can tell. it gave me an error code.. 14? not enough recources for the device.

Well it seemed fine and dandy that just my on-board ethernet died so I installed an ethernet card. The only problem is that Windows doesn't see the new card!!!

Does anyone have any idea what might have burned out if it isn't just the on-board ethernet (the sound and everything still works)?

Could be something relating to the PCI bus, but that's just a guess. You'd probably be better off examining the board and components for any signs of damage.

What Áedán says. Generally, when you let the blue smoke out of the parts and they stop working, there will be some telltale burn marks.

Haven't found any burn marks yet. Maybe when I pull it out for RMA in a minute I'll see something.

Yep, I found some small burn marks right by the IDE connectors before I sent it to Newegg...

On the top or on the bottom of the mainboard? You have my sympathy, two Soyo mobo's that I had long ago burned, albeit in "slow motion."

On the bottom side. It looked like it was on the traces going to the FDD controller but the only problem I had was no PCI bus.

At least this gave me some time to modify my Zalman reserator and rip the heatspreader off of my CPU.
