IE doesn't work

hi,

i have a laptop that has a valid ip address. it has aol and aol connects fine. i can see others in the network and the IE inside aol works.

but IE off the desktop does not work. i tried the internet settings...security to cookies to even registry hacks. still nothing. so i took out my trusty jumpdrive which has firefox installed. firefox works flawlessly. so i installed firefox on the laptop and it works fine. yet IE still doesn't work. so i've isolated the problem to IE alone. i created a new user account and still nothing.

help?!?!?!?!

thanks,
barneygumble742

I think this is a thing with AOL. Try reinstalling it, and reinstalling IE. I'm pretty sure I've seen this before. Is it the lastest version of AOL? Does it connect to the web ONLY using AOL? Then that's probably what your prob is.

even when inside aol, only the IE inside aol works. whereas the ie outside aol does not work. i haven't tried uninstalling aol/re-installing it yet.

one major obstacle i have is that i can't do a factory restore because there are some apps that i'll loose; apps with lost cds. its actually for an stock broker. he did a factory restore before but re-installing everything took like 12 hours.

but thanks...about aol. i'll try that.

Ghost your machine before you uninstall AOL. I'm inclined to agree with Robbie that it is something with AOL, but the last machine I had with AOL on it that I tried to uninstall ended up giving me a BSOD.

Hiya,

I have been looking thro google for you, and noticed quite a few similar problems to yours, "my hotmail account on aol but the website will not load on normal IE", so it definately is a common problem.

The only thing I think i can suggest is what they have said above. Install IE over AOL, see if that works. AOL must, in some way, stop you using standard IE to force you to use theirs, they might have added extra features to IE.

Either that, or get rid of AOL, I am sure I can think of other ISP's which are alot better than AOL.

I gotta ask. Is having no IE a disaster? Not that I can see.

i ended up restoring the laptop to factory settings. its a crappy gateway laptop (not mine). it's a friend of mine's who's got a ton of accounting apps and its a pain to install it one by one. sad to say i gave up. personally i can't stand IE but since it's not my pc and i know how addictive some people have gotten to IE...and aol. i haven't tried accessing a website from windows explorer. i didn't think of that.

thanks,
barneygumble742
