Unhappy Reboots !!! Why ???

My f-laws PC reboots on its own from windows(98SE) It just drops out of windows and is immediately going through start up and then you get a protection error message. The motherboard is ECS k7AMA and it has an Athlon 1000 with 256 DDR SDRAM. I have checked all jumpers and they are correct. The guy that built it even reformatted the HD and reinstalled windows and it still was unstable. After that he even redid the dos partition and reinstalled. You can't have it up ten minutes and its rebooting. The processor does not seem to be overheating either. The Hard Disk is Western Digital. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Could be a lot of things. Bad PSU, or bad memory would be the first things I would try to rule out. I'd let the "guy who built it" deal with it. I assume it's under warrantee.

Well, being that I've built systems for several ppl, I would say have the guy who built it come repair it. I'm concerned with making the person who spent the money happy more than I am with building the system and making a little extra cash. I give in house free for the first 90 days, then help whenever needed via email (not very often, and only had 1 in house since '99) Sounds like a bad psu to me though. Is it a 300w psu? My bro tried to use a 250w psu with his 1.2 and it would often as well.

I built PCs that I never made a dime on, for friends etc...

anyway, what you describe is hardware, meaning you can reinstall windows 1,000 times and have the same issue until the hardware is addressed. One thing you would need is extra components for testing (swap out a component to see if it still crashes with the replacement)... the person who built this might have extra parts laying around for just this reason (lord knows I do ).

SteveI is right, check the PSU and memory first, they are the usual culprits in spontaneous reboots.

Hope you have some spare parts, but if you don't get some from the builder.

When you say it "does not seem to be overheating", do you have temp readings? If you don't have anything installed, look in the BIOS. There should be a PC health section that will give you voltages and temps. Check the CPU temp...

There are many possibilities. I know I don't have much info, but the guy who built the system sounds pretty clueless.
