K7VT2 USB problem

Hi,

This isn't exactly an overclocking problem but there's a lot of wise people on this forum so I thought I'd ask.

I'm currently trying to fix a machine that uses an ASRock K7VT2 motherboard which has a VIA KT266A chipset. The problem is that whenever a USB device is plugged in Windows re-boots after installing the driver. The problem seems to have started to occur after some security patches were installed. It's not my machine so I don't know exactly what patches but it was around the point that MS brought out their anti-spyware software.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

cheers,

Richard

I guess the first thing I would do is try to reinstall the mobo drivers?

Yeah that's one of the first things I tried. I imagine it's going to end up with me re-building the machine but I really can't face all the installing.

Well I fixed this so I thought I'd put a post here in case anybody else comes across this problem.

I resolved the problem by starting Windows up in safemode, removing all USB drivers (controller, hubs etc) in the device manager and then re-starting. Once re-started Windows re-installed all the USB related device drivers and everything worked again. From what I've read simply removing the drivers when in normal mode will not make any difference.

Not entirely sure why this fixed the problem, I think that it might have been a resource conflict and removing all the drivers forced Windows to put them back from scratch and as a result changing the IRQs etc.

Glad you were able to get the problem resolved without having to take such drastic measures. That trick about starting in Windows Safe Mode is something I'll have to remember.
