If it just suddenly started to happen it could one of several things:

1 -- Data corruption, not uncommon

2 -- A fan inside the case, preferably the heatsink fan, may have stopped working and things are getting too hot.

3 -- A memory module died.

4 -- A driver, maybe something directx, got corrupted or something installed overwrote it...

I suggesting trying to boot into safe mode. If it makes a safe mode boot, it's probably not hardware. If safe mode fails, you're likely to have a faulty component.

If you can boot into safe mode, either reimage or run windows backup or recovery from the XP installation disk.

What I do when stuff like that happens on XP,

1) reinstall all your "iffy" hardware that can cause problems. Video card, and such

2) Run "chkdsk /f /r" that'll take about 30min but if there's a disk error it'll pick it up.

3) If you still have the problem, go the device manager and check if you have a lot devices sharing irqs. If so you might have to diable ACPI(Advanced Configuration Power Interface). A lot of people can only get stability in 2k/XP if they have ACPI disabled. To disable it in the device manager, click on the driver for your pc, it'll be like "acpi compliant PC" Go to update driver, and choose from list. Select "standard pc" restart and windows will reinstall all your hardware, and there will be no more irq sharing and you will be more stable. The only drawback is there is no more stand-by without ACPI, but I rather eliminate some blue screens and sacrifice stand-by.
