Need some advice. Please :)

Before I start losing it and kill every bit of hardware in that cursed machine, I thought I might try to see if I can find a resolution here.

So here's the problem.

When I switch on the cursed machine, it turns off within 2 seconds. (!?)

So I've tried the following:

#Swapped PSU's
#Took out every non essential piece of hardware
#Cleared the CMOS
#Shouted at it
#Checked the Mobo isn't shorting and what not
#Moved it to a different room (Yea.. I'm getting desperate)
#Switched Cases
#Tried with no Case
#Swapped DIMM slots

I think the mobo is fried, but I can't be sure. Anyone have any ideas?

That sounds like a thermal trip

Was it working OK before at -30C? I thought A64's had problems at temps lower than something like -20C where the sensor doesn't work correctly.

The board can't read temps below 0.

Yup I gave it a go, but no luck. I think I'm going to take the phase change offline and stick the stock fan on there and see what happens.

Rather than take the phase off I'd just hook up a fan to the "CPU" header. I'd be willing to bet that it's not powering up cuz of the "turn off if there is NO fan feature" is enabled?!?!!?

Isn't the thermal trip built into the cpu? or is that just with intel chips?

Ive had a problem like that on my Abit AV8 when I accidentally plugged the CPU fan into the northbridge fan header. There aren't all that many other things that make it shut down that soon other that that or a thermal shutdown. Athlon 64s should actually wait alot longer than 2 seconds to shut down, as the CPU is supposed to try thermal throttling before it shut down, but i guess it could still happen.

I honestly dont know where the thermal shutdown is, but it has to be supported and turned on in the BIOS for it to work, and some motherboards dont have it at all so i dont think its in the CPU. The CPU is however meant to throttle in 3 steps before it takes any other action. 75% 50% then 25%. And at 25% most Winchesters can run passively in a large case.

One word,
con-den-sation OK that's three! But this is why I gave away my Vapochill, could never keep it dry for more than three months, would get flakier and flakier until I opened it up and let everything dry for a few days. Good news is that it always did startup again after drying, just got tired of the hassle.

Anyway worth considering...

Ok looks like the board is dead. Typical 2 weeks without a GFX card. Get the GFX card back and the board has packed in.

I think my PC has been watching a certain haunted video...
