Keyboard/Mouse issue with K6-2

My old AMD K6-2 powered Compaq, has started playing funny buggers. And I havent touched it! The computer itself doesnt lock up. But the keyboard and mouse stop responding. IE: mouse doesnt move, and when I hit the Windows key, the start menu doesnt pop up.

Its in stock standard condition. Everything is original except the mouse, the original's left-mouse button stopped working, over used i'd say.

Both keyboard and mouse are PS/2. Original and second.

Ok, check all your fans inside the system, sound like an overheating problem. Most Compaq (and other vendors from that era) systems used large system fans to cool the CPU (and by default the chipset). I am betting either the fan(s) are crapping out or your box is plugged with dust. These systems did not run particularly hot but withthe generally poor airflow in systems back then, any reduction would cause lockups. I got a Gateway pIII-500 sitting here with a similar problem.

The computer doesnt lock up though! If your playing solitaire. The keybaord/mouse freezes but the timer continues counting up.

Check that stuff anyway - the other options is to reformat and reload, are you running WIn98 on that thing?

Yeah running Windows 98SE. Checked it non-the-less. Dismantled the entire system. But guess what the good news is. It worked when I put it back together. That didnt fix it, but it needed a clean anyway. But turned out to be the mouse, because now the mouse is totally dead. No red laser light. Thanks all the same guys.
