If the problem is mechanical wear on the spindle then it is quite often possible to get the drive up and going with some physical encouragement. A good firm whack can do it.

noorman is right, what he says sounds familiar. I think I can recall something about apparently dead drives working when put on their side. It does work sometimes.

I didn't read it had stopped turning; my bad drive was still spinning, but I couldn't get data of it anymore.
By starting up on its side, miraculously, I could see partitions and could access data, so I quickly recovered (copied) ...

I'm only joking with you noorman

The drive's into the shop for them to try recovery, it was still spinning though.

well, it remains a good idea to try out next time, so you wouldn't need the help of 'the shop' to recover data (if you 're lucky) !

I can stand a joke (now and then), no problem ...

May I ask what brand(s) of HDD's went South, dod? Not that there is necessarily a corelation of brand, model and durability. I'm wondering if a tape backup beats burning the data onto DVD's? Tape cartridges are expensive, as well as the drives. But they automagically do back-ups-- I think.

Drive orientation

Changing the drive orientation has worked for me in the past. Something to do with bearings bedding in I guess. Have also had problems with drives not wanting to start due to deteriorated lubrication. Getting it warm for a while first before firing it up can help.

Coincidentally both were Maxtor 40Gb DM9, but I've also had WD and seagate going over the last year or so, such is life.

Thank you, dod. It's good to read that no Seagate's went bad on you! Cough.

The problem with tape backups is the reliability of the media. Tape works great but just like a VCR tape after you have recorded and erased it 8-10 times it begins to have errors. In a corporate environment the tapes are handled very carefully and rotated/replaced regularly. The other issue is the amount of time some tape systems can take to backup data. DVD is faster - but requires user intervention, and DVDs aren't 100% reliable either. If data is important I just make an extra copy of the data on another CD or DVD. The only downside to this is that I have two copies of a lot of stuff hehe

I use DVD copies for important stuff (even my movies, I have backed-up just in-case) and have hard-drive copies for everything I download off the net.

lol, haven't had a chance to chase them up yet, been far too busy with work stuff. I'm guessing that no news is bad news though.

Seeing a horse kick one of those ungrateful HDD's to the moon would be kewl. Probably too dangerous for a hoof, sigh. And I'd guess you wouldn't want to encourage Dobbin to be anti social. How's your back treating you these days?

Getting better C thanks for asking Thing which still hurts is sitting down for any length of time. Apparently the damage to the disk isn't fully healed and in turn it puts pressure on the nerve. You can be fine for an hour or so and then suddenly feel like someone's stabbing your leg, can be a bit annoying.

Oh, and speaking of Dobbin it looks like D's in the Scottish team again, that's three years in a row, damn proud of that woman

I'm sorry to read that your own back has the crust to give you pain. Seems like pain is free whereas feeling well can be expensive, if only for the time it demands. I joined an exercise group Thursday. My chest made loud popping and snapping noises during the press up exercises. Loud, really! It's always something.

Woo hoooo, just got a phone call, they've managed to recover about 24Gb of the 25 which was on the disk.

And Cloasters, that sounds scary

Congratulations to your better half, it can't be easy to make it on to a national team! I'm glad that 24 Gb has been recovered, but it sure wasn't inexpensive to grab that data. The popping and snapping was scary, but there was very little pain the next day. Yaay!
