Thanks for the Starforce tip - I've now found and destroyed all traces.

I recently had an unexplained drive failure (Phillips 1640 stopped recognising CDs - still OK with DVDs) - I put it down to bad luck but now I'm not so sure.

From what I've read the drivers loaded create a back door to allow direct access to optical drives. To get this sort of thing as a silent payload to a legitimate software purchase worries me. As far as I can see this is just hacking the OS and Rootkit has already shown that this is not a good thing.

I will vote with my wallet with the software publishers concerned but I suspect the real answer will be rules on what Windows allows applications to tinker with - at the moment it seems to be far too much.

The last I was aware of was the latest Splinter Cell, but I dont get too many games so I may have been lucky.
