@ Wolf200me - I was running Xfire, and it could be that it uses a version of IRC?

@ JimF - I ran them both yesterday, And I was able to game for a few hours without a crash! The online SMART analysis says my drive is 94% fit and also 94% fast.

As it is I am hoping that reinstalling the GFX drivers cured it all, but I can't be sure.

I've done a little thhinking - how big do you think the chance is that this problem is PSU related?

Because after I crashed last night, I was able to game for a good few hours without a further lock-up.

Test it, with a mates power supply.

Definately considerable. You might do good to buy a good PSU. That's never wasted money as it could serve your future systems as well, even if your problem isn't solved by that.

Your temperatures are definately okay so for testing purposes you could try to overvolt a few components a little to see if you crash faster. Don't overdo it of course as you don't want to be causing more problems.

OK

Can anyone recomend me a good PSU that will last me a few years? I was thinking something like a 380 Watt Tagan? Or would I do better to get another brand/higher rated PSU?

Many folks hereabouts are fond of Enermax PSU's. When buying a new PS it's good to buy much more capacity than you think you need. The latest high end Vidcards are gluttons for power, as in a 650 Watt power supply for some up to date rigs is not enough.

The PSU for a new system used to be an after thought. No longer.

As the PSU looks like the next step - is there anything you can disconnect (CD/DVD drives) to test this ? Just having a CD in the drive used to push my 350W unit over the edge (the unit runs fine in another box which doesn't have so many toys in).

I have a Tagan TG480-U22 480W - its quiet, a little smaller than some and has every connector I could imagine needing. On the downside its not intended to be part of the case cooling solution (no fan in the base of the unit) and finding a neat way of hiding the cables I don't use was tiresome.

Also, try not to attach hard disks on the lower end of a PSU cable when something else is drawing power from that cable. And don't attach fans on cables that provide power to hard disks.
Enermax, Antec, OCZ,... are good brands. You can usually recognise a good PSU when you look at its price.

Have you by any chance set up a custom swap file size, one perhaps on the small side?

definitely do not go cheap on the PSU. Several good brands have been metioned already, I would not get anything less than 500 watts at this point. If you don't need it now you will soon....

Thanks for the advice, Dolanen

As things are I am trying to scratch some coppers together and give my PC a bit of an overhaul. In the mean time I have stopped having any form of lock-up

I guess that would be one of those no-news-is-good-news deals, eh?

Yeah but a big bunch of those posts of Favu were spent making comments about the nature of my posts....I guess that still counts, technically...

Well, I smelled burning rubber right now, and Pitch told me this was the smell of caps that are giving up the ghost.

So I've taken the PSU out of that PC and looked it over and smelled, it seems OK but I'm too much of a coward to risk it. I will wait till I have a more reputable PSU
