I find this rather an arbitrary qualification! Next you'll be insisting a MS product has to work in order to be successful...which is clearly not the case! ":O}

Apologies RussianMissile1, however it is hardly surprising when you take 2-3 days to reply back to the forum (especially since this is your firewall problem and one would assume that a firewall being out of action would be classified as "mission critical")

In saying that though, there's an ancient proverb about people that live in glass houses. You yourself posted a reply within this thread that wasn't related to the issue. Practice what you preach.

Finally, you have yet to tell us if you have fixed the problem or not.

firewall isnt mission critical, i just dont visit porn sites and the like, so very little chance of me picking up something, and if someone wants to hack me, go right ahead, i have everything backed up, and a reformat will fix it.

well, i preach after i practice, not the other way around. so its all legal, just like we dont have "reverse-action" laws (i forget the term for those) that dont convict you of something you did before the law was enacted that made that something a crime. since i cant delete others' posts, i cant unhijak the thread, so i might as well deal with it and add to the discussion.

and also if you read more carefully my last post before this one, you will notice that the issue is not solved

and btw, your tone offends me, i feel like im being talked to as if im a child.

Agreed. I feel that the established AOA members give this forum a special balance. We never flame, we never flame eachother. Occasionally me and Dsio have a little poke at eachother but here on AOA we generally do not flame.
Please do not upset this balance! I like it as it is! Just chill out a bit and relax.
Now back on topic. Has anyone got any further suggestions for Russian Missile?

Noob

just kidding.

RussianMissile 1 - I'm sure membreya was being sarcastic, or at least I hope so.

Did your Windows Firewall work on that machine at some point in the past? If it did then maybe you can check through your programs to see if installing anything disabled it, or the like.

Just a retaliatiary knee-jerk reaction, emphasis on the jerk. This time I do sincerley apologise.

One thing RussianMissile1, you still haven't gotten back to us on whether the windows event log is showing you any failures?

EDIT: Have you checked your group policy settings? Just in case you happened to have inadvertantly added yourself to a domain?

Start > Run > gpedit.msc..Go to Administrative Templates / Network / Network Connections / Windows Firewall. Under that setting there will be an option that says "Windows Firewall: Protect All Network Connections" Is that enabled/disabled or not configured?

Nope, I pay 69/99 for Retail Upgrade, not OEM. OEM I usually just go through MS Licensing to get those lovely $15 discounts. But hey, it's not like I go to technical trade shows, conventions, or read the FACTS.

$69 + $5 for an old win98 cd with coa/product key. But if you wanna remain on the whole bandwagon of MS haters and turn a cheek to factual information and only look at it from one side with a closed mind and a solid opinion thats not going to be changed, then, more power to ya

I am not ignoring the facts. I am quoting the facts as I know them to be. A quick perusal of NewEgg will provide the prices that I quoted, and NewEgg is about the cheapest out there, unless you have the capability to buy directly from MS (mere mortals like me can't do that).

Tell me, how can I get copy of WindowsXP for $69? For that matter, where can I get a copy of Win 98 for $5? You simply coming and saying something does not make it so. Educate and enlighten me in my ignorance. I'm sure there are a great many people here who would LOVE to be able to purchase a new copy of WinXP (or Vista, when it finally ships) for a mere $73. I myself would be ecstatic. Since all of my machines are home-built, I have to shell out for full retail copies every time I build a new machine, and those are majorly expensive.

Well lets see. I live in Southern California, and attend what is called a computer show. These show's consist of vendors from north los angeles to southern san diego. from the coast line to san bernardino. They typically bring thousands of dollars worth of product to large convention center type locations (most commonly the fairgrounds. www.lacomputerfair.com) and offer their products at a decent price. Usually far cheaper than retail store prices in order to move product and get their sales volume up.

For example, buying 100 pack of 16x dual layer dvd's only cost ya about $15 for the avg stuff up to 25 for the high end stuff. No we're not talking about Maxell Verbatim or other crappy major brands who insist on selling crap product at full price because of the name ::cough:: sony ::cough:: but good stuff. Ridata, FinoDisc, Imation, etc.

Anyhow, with generally lower prices here in southern california, it's not hard to find a great deal on any type of consumer computer product. This is especially true for software. A full version legit copy retail xp home with sp2 costs between 129 and 139, and the professional sp2 full retail is between 169-189. the upgrade versions (full install) are usually half the cost of the full version and they have copies of qualified windows media dirt cheap as well. At the last show I went to I was picking up a copy of visual studio 2005 enterprise and while doing so, I saw they had 3 copies of windows 98se for $20 each and win98 for 10 each, i offered $8 and walked away with my new software. No, they're not pirated versions, yes I have checked with microsoft on several copies I've purchased. People act like what I say is hearsay but ask robbie, he'll agree everything here is cheaper than anywhere east of Ca. or at least he should. Here's another example, AMD Sempron 3100+ and an ECS nforce4-a754 (http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Product...uID=21&LanID=9) for $69 out the door.
Or 2gb dual channel various brand 2.5-2-2-5 for $130, or 19" lcd's for $199. or usb wireless G nic's with 3 antenna's for $9.99, usb wireless b/g nic's for $4.99. The computer show is today and tomorrow, hopefully I'll get a chance to go to the show tomorrow and if so I'll take a video camera and just show you all some of the deals and savings the So. Cal has to offer. Albiet the average rent in my area for a 2 bedroom is $2,000/month but whatever.

Please drop the condescending attitude. It is unbecoming to the discussion.

As for the rest, I am happy for you that you have such ready and easy access to such significantly reduced costs. Perhaps you should consider setting up a shop to resell such things? I'm sure you could make a lot of money for yourself, and save people like me a lot of money into the bargain.

For me to attend a computer show of consequence, I will have to drive at least 120 miles, one way. Since that would be Tulsa, and since I have attended such shows in the past, I can tell you that any deals I could pick up there would be, shall we say, less than stellar.

That leaves Kansas City (180 miles), or St. Louis (300 miles). You can understand that the deals you rave about which show MS to be such a great outfit (in your eyes) are in fact not available to me (nor to a significant portion of the population).

Now I really won't blame Russian Missile for being upset about thread hijacking. Come on guys, he needs help. Not two people arguing over the price of an OS.

Help is on it's way, but we're still waiting for RussianMissile1 to respond back to some questions and suggestions the conversations simply serve as a distraction.

Actually, his experience would differ from the rest of the planets. Do you have a paticular reason for hating newegg?

I've yet to personally meet (in the thousands of people I've delt with) that does not appreciate newegg's prices, service, user-friendly site, and customer attention.

I could give some excellent examples...however there's too many. I've never had a company try so hard to retain my business, simply put, I wish most companies were "newegg" at heart.

Now, look what you've made me do, I'm joining your completely off topic postings becuase of your insults to the big Egg. The horror.....the horror....

/end rant
