I'd suggest for the future that you create seperate partitions for data and OS and move 'my documents' into the data partition.

I know this won't help if the disk fails totally but I do this so I can backup and restore the OS and programs without touching data.

Good luck with the new PSU - any chance you can RMA the old drive with Seagate for use as a backup (eg in a USB enclosure) ?

It's nearly a year old and a new drive of the same capacity is only £40. For the fuss, I just can't be bothered to be honest!
I suspect it may be working, so I AM going to buy an external enclosure to shove it in.

Repair install doesnt work. Recovery console doesnt work. So I think I have lost it. I literally burst into tears. Im so fed up with all of this sh1t. And now I have a 4 hour photography exam.

Fan-bloody-tastic.

after several attempts to install XP and Lynux on three different hdd,
I discovered one stick of mem was NFG. with the bad stick out, the
install went flawlessly. I feel your pain.

I forgot to mention that I tried the install on two different mainboards as well. it all started with random lockups and a few random reboots. I really think that hardware issues are harder to diagnose due to the number of components that can cause similar issues. I try to keep one machine running with the absolute minimum of hardware/software. this gives me somewhere to try different hardware with Win2K. very few software issues, if any. OS installed as a laptop.

IT's silent. Altogether, my PC is so quiet that when typing you can barely hear it. I have three 120mm fans and my HSF, they are all super quiet yet my PC's system temp is a chilly 19 degrees and my CPU temp never goes above 29 degrees.
Cool dude!

Right, sorry but i havent read the full thread. You mentioned that the pc boots up and then it loads then desktop the freezes?

If thats the thing, When the desktop is frozen, Open up task manager, log of through task manager and log back in and then you can use windows as normal. Back up your music and apply everysingle update from microsoft as mine sorted out after the updates

If this aint the problem, feel free to E-SLap me:P

Which means I've quite possibly spent £100 or more on a new PSU and hard drive for absolutely no reason.
