It may be a Graphics Card problem.....
Do you have a genuine retail version of XP ? Or do you have an OEM version ?

Retail version should give you plenty of ideas regarding fixes via product support - and those guys at Microsoft may only point you in the direction of a KB article - but it will be the right one.

You have the beginning of a new PC, though.

Yes. Which is going wrong from the same problem...again.
I have an OEM package Andy. I do not get that problem now - I fixed it. :-)

I have a new lead on the re-booting as it loads up Windows problem.
Right. Yesterday my PC was telling me I was using 1.5Gb of pagefile usage, running my normal applications.
After it did it's silly re-boot thingy today, it now shows up 400mb, which is a little more, er, normal.
So, I'm thinking this may be a software issue or my memory.

Hmm. I was going to suggest the problems with the hard drive spinning up then dropping off could be a power problem.

I had a similar problem, i couldn't boot into windows as my master drive was spinning up then powering off. I found out that it was being caused by a faulty UV CCFL that i had installed piggy backing power off the hard drive's molex. I removed it from the link and it worked first time.

Although i did take advantage of this 'hard drive failure' at college to get 2 week extensions on all my assignments that had to be handed in in my final month at college!

Check that you haven't got any faulty gear (IE fans/fan controllers/lights etc) piggy backing power from the hard drive if this keeps happening.

Also don't piggy back power for a graphics card from the hard drive. As when both the hard drive and graphics card kick in to performance mode there won't be enough draw from the power supply (if it's a rubbish one anyway) to power both simultaneously on the same link.

PSU is a brand new £60 Antec 480Watt ATX 2.0 unit.
I've tried the whole unplugging routine etc too...

It does depend on what your normal applications are but AFAIK 1.5 times your installed memory is what its meant to be. Some applications (Flight Simulator was one) are known to complain if the page file is manually set - whatever the value.

To go back to the original problem - my favourites for rebooting on loading are PSU and Hard Disk problems but as you've eliminated them I'd suggest looking at the drive cable and HDD controller drivers and settings.
