Friends laptop FUBAR'd, any ideas what to do?

Hello all, I've been dumped with a Laptop and asked to get it working! Its a fairly new'ish machine that ran Win XP Home, but only with SP1. The friend got some free Broadand offer, installed the USB modem, connected to the WWW and everything went pear shaped from there.

I'm figuring its some spyware or virus type problem as the PC was very very slow and unresponsive at doing anything, opening a word document took minutes, it was impossible to run AVG Antivirus, Adaware or SpyBot S&D. I say "was" because now the machine will not even start up. It begins to boot, gets to the Win XP Home flash screen, sits there for about 2 min, then the screen BSOD's and the machine reboots and the cycle starts again.

Was there a SP1 virus exploit I remember a while ago that did this? Could this be it? Any solutions you can recommend other than formatting and reinstalling?
If there is some important info on the disc, is it possible to recover it by connecting it to another machine as a secondary drive? If so how? Can the Virus then infect the other machine?

Most viruses shouldn't jump across unless you open the infected file.

You can get an adapter relatively cheaply and put the laptop HDD into your desktop.

I would recommend then running a virus scan on the HDD before you take anything off it, though.
