***win98 Wont Boot***
heres what it says on boot.......

The following File is missing or corrupted: C:\windows\himem.sys
There is an error in your config.sys file on line 1
IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM Device Driver version 2.11 17:30:39 06/7/96
CD-ROM Drive #0 found on 1F0h port slave devices, v112

Cannot find win.com, unable to coninue loading windows



any suggestions

I would deltree windows, reinstall, backup important data, format C: and reinstall once again.
( just a reminder :if you deltree windows, everything thats on your desktop gets lost...)

Win98SE just can't get the OS's installation right sometimes. It loves "losing" emm386.exe and himem.sys. You know that the installation is really screwed when 20 or so .OCX and .DLL files are missing.

You can copy these(emm386.exe or himem.sys.-- Fuhgettaboud trying to put all the .dll and .ocx files where they belong) to where they are supposed to be, assuming that you have the files on a floppy. This works about one third of the time.

Otherwise, a wipe and reinstall is the only way.

Once you get the system fixed, it would probably be a good Idea to make a drive image with Norton Ghost, and do so again periodically. Then if files start coming up missing again you can simply restore the whole drive from the image file.

Good luck getting you friend's system squared away.
