Windows wont install on hard disk

Ok first off I DO NOT WANT TO FORMAT my hard drive due to not wanting to lose everything and i have no way of backing it up.

I can not install windows on my hard disk for some reason. I have tried and tried and I cant figure it out.

Seems to depend on how the volume was created in the first place - as its listed as a system disk it should be OK.

For some reason file copying from the CD seems more critical at install time - suggest you clean the CD or try copying its contents to the HD so you can install from there.

With HDD prices low at the moment it might be worth considering a backup drive....

If you are overclocking during install, try installing a default speed and see if that clears it up.

OK, XP may well be different. But in W2K I had to create a small 20 gig partition in order to install w2K. It still has trouble with large hard drives even when all the drivers are present and slipstreamed into the W2k install.

I should have remebered as this has caught me out - before SP1 XP didn't have LBA support - if this is XP classic install you may be bumping into the 137 Gb limit.

Installing XP over Vista

The fix is simple, but it'll have you banging your head for days if you don't know it.

Use the XP cd to go into repair mode. Type this:

RENAME c:\windows Vista

...then run the installation again.

basically, you're just renaming the vista folder to something else, so it doesn't get in the way of installing XP.
