Blue Screening, orean32, booting problems!

Hi there.

Here's the deal. I just got myself a new monitor the ViewSonic VX922 on Thursday. Everything has been peachy and the new monitor is lovely.

Sequence of events

I discovered that after unplugging my monitor from my video card (machine on, off or electrically disconnected) that if I plugged it back in again the machine would not boot. Reseating the graphics card did not help, but after reseating the memory it would start working again. This would have to be done EVEN if the machine had been turned off BEFORE unplugging the video cable. Very strange but I've been living with it.

17/10/06
orean32 has started making a system error during start up. I only noticed this yesterday after looking though the Event Viewer. Not sure what this is or what it's doing, but searching online has not given me any answers.

Saturday - 04/11/06
I was at a LAN this Sat (go to one every month) at about 16:00ish my machine stared crashing repeatedly. To begin with it was just The Ship that was crashing, pretty much every time that I would try and join the server it would freeze, or crash to desktop in the typical Source style. Wasn’t too worried about this as Source can be a temperamental beast at the best of times. Then BF2 started crashing to desktop, and Dawn of War blue screened. Things were not looking good. I started looking for signs of overheating (ambient temp was definitely higher at the LAN) but the CPU, system and video card were all looking fine. The memory however was burning hot. Not burn your fingers straight away, but if you held it for a couple of seconds it was getting sore. I know memory can get hot and it does get pretty warm normally but it definitely looked bad. I un-tightened my timings on the memory and lowered the voltage to 2.60 but this did nothing. I then tried some new drivers for my graphics (96.89 XG) and the new X-Fi drivers from the Creative site, but these did nothing either. By this stage the machine would be restarting in windows and blue screening with random errors. Sometimes not even managing to boot, would get to the windows loading screen and then restart. I did however have the machine running stably (I think) for a bit while I played some 2142. During this time the machine was on it's side with the side panel off. This surely pointed at an overheating problem. Then it
started crashing like that as well.

The next day I took most of the components out and gave them a clean. I clean my machine out normally once a month so there was barely any dust in there, certainly not enough to cause a reduction in air flow. Cleaning the machine out didn't stop the crashing. A friend at the LAN then lent me a stick of his memory, my machine didn’t crash for the rest of LAN. It was running it on its side again with the side panel off (just to be safe).

After taking it home it’s been doing the same things. I did a system restore this morning to last Thursday (when I got my monitor), it hasn’t crashed yet, so maybe it's just Windows messing up, don't know yet. I’ve done a scandisk of my primary drive and found no problems and I’ve ran Prime95 for 4hrs (so far) and had no problems. I'm just about to run Memtest to rule out/confirm my memory as the problem.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Niall

From your description I would most likely say bad RAM

The only other things are what PSU are you using, and what RAM, speed and timings do you have?

Also if you could provide full specs please

Spec are in my sig.

I did a memtest for 12hrs, it passed though it 25 times with no errors. PSU voltages are all peachy. The oreans32 thingy I've found in my devices list and removed it, seems to have gone now, very strange. Wonder what it was.

I tried a google on it. It came up with adware warnings and virus warnings.

If it fixed it it must be bad...

Now that it is stable it is time to really test it out. How about a fresh install of F@H for team 45 to really check that stability....

Did a fresh install of Windows today due to my machine still crashing. Still blue screening with random error messages. Nothing appearing in the system logs, sometimes the machine won't even start. Maybe my MB is on the way out? Bugger.

Did you use any power protection at the LAN?

Best you can do is swap over parts to narrow it down.

Don't assume the PSU is fine, just becuase the voltages look OK in th BIOS.

Yeah, I have a power surge protector that I take everywere i go and also use at home. The Tagan is solid but I guess it could be a problem. The 3.3V line is sitting at about 2.8V though......erm......that's not good is it?

btw, what voltage should my AGP slot be running at? It's currently at 1.5V and the clock is set at 66Mhz. Should I maybe try changing them?

Those settings are correct. Don't change the AGP voltage, it may damage your card.

Set memory to 2.5-3-3-7, sometimes there are problems running CAS latency of 2 with an athlon XP.

ok! Leaving the AGP setting alone!

The memory setting I agree are tight, but I've been running them like this for ages now. Did memtest as well for 23 odd hours with no problems and I've also tried loosening them up a bit with no changes.

I'm starting to think it is more likely that the power supply is not working properly. Windows is running fine now, but when I try to run any of my games it crashes after a minate or two. My graphics card requires a 400W PSU min and I've got a 480W. Coupled with everything else I'm running maybe I've driven the poor Tagan too hard and it's just not coping anymore. I'm running the vanilla nVidia drivers now (93.71) just incase the XG ones were messing it up. What should I do now you reckon?

MB is dead. Won't boot most of the time, internal speaker doing the tune of death (i.e. my AGP slot is not working and I'm not coming out to play tune). If it does mange to boot, it crashes with in minutes. Tried different video cards with no results. Bye bye DFI Skt A, hello Conroe Duo. Thanks for all the help guys, shame there was nothing we could do but watch it die. Ah well.

Bad luck mate. You tried your best.
But maybe this is a good excuse to upgrade?
