barely running due to a virus before reload any ideas?

Welcome to AOA smytherss! Perhaps partitioning was required before formatting.

HPs are known to have partitions for utilities and restore functions. Boot to XP cd and delete all partitions and then install.

How big is the unknown disk? It may be formatted other than ntfs. Does it allow you to delete all the partitions?

I had a similar issue with a Compaq. I think I installed the drive as a slave in another machine and use disk manager to get rid of the volume info....

Those partition s may well be the protected system hidden partitions, whithout which you will lose the original HP OS. Then may have to buy new XP license/disc to install. I wouldnt reformat or delete them WITHOUT either having a good new XP disc/license, or knowing that the restore discs you now use will properly repartition and install the OS as originally intended. The proprietary bios may prevent a "regular" XP install from working properly. Why it would even show them (usually hidden completely) or why 5, REMOVABLE drives is beyond me. Call HP...in the interim, I'd only reformat/reinstall according to the HP restore disc prompts and documentation for a clean reinstall. When you confirm that a) you can delete those, reformat full drive and/or add an aftermarket additional drive and b) you can then reinstall the restore discs with existing HPbranded XP license, proceed. Otherwise be prepared to get a new pc and os. Other manufacturers use different schemes: SAMUKNOW's anecdotal experience is for THAT COMPAQ: I'd not reccomend you extrapolate his info cross-platforms.

Have experince proprietary OEM pc's needing a risky reflash with a non-specified bios in order to use a regular MS XP disc, and install new aftermarket hd. I'll never ever buy another compuqe computer lol...its next to impossible to upgrade properly, afterall they only want you to buy another HP when you want bigger/faster stuff. Beware also some oem's only give you the preinsatlled OS in the hidden drive: trash THAT and lose windows...
I hope your situation is workable. Pleas do keep us apprised!
Cheers, Andy .
