Cant install OS

Hi guys

Just rebuilt my PC with the following bits

Asus Crossfire Motherboard
AMD X2 FX-62 CPU
4gb OCZ 8500 DDR2
2x 8800GTX

It boots up fine and I can go into the bios so changed that to boot from cd, put in the Vista dvd and all I get is a black screen with a flashing _ in he top left hand side of the screen

Any ideas would be good cause as you can tell I have just spent the odd £ or so.

That generally means that the DVD reader has been having problems reading the disc. Either because the reader isn't working too well, or because of damage to the disc. Do you have a spare DVD reader to try with?

unfortunatly I dont the disk is brand new and the DVD drive was working fine about an hour ago.

Could it be RAM?

The mobo supports DDR2 800
However my ram is DDR2 8500 (is that 850?)

If so how do I slow it down?

That shouldn't be an issue unless you've overclocked things already and not checked it's stable.

Is the DVD drive a writer? Is it set to master or slave? Are there any other drives on it's ide channel?

Raphael makes a random statement about how awesome your new hardware is.

He then proceeds to collect his jaw from the ground.

He tickles your graphics cards and walks away.

This might sound dumb, but are you trying to run SLI on a crossfire motherboard?

Ok right after a bit of swaring and changing sata cables about it seems to be loading fine! (well it has now) but only with the vista dvd in the drive.

Odd. only thing I can think of is - is the BIOS seeing the DVD rom as a HDD, and refusing to boot unless it can access it? (which would mean it needs a CD or DVD with bootloader in in, IE the vista DVD)

Could be. Might be worth checking the BIOS and boot order.
