Well, thats the end of that

My computer has died.

At first, it started doing its whole reset whilst loading windows crap again.

Then, it started resetting after you get the screen where you select safe mode etc. Meaning I couldn't get into Windows.

Now it just freezes at that screen. I spent an hour trying to get it to load to no avail. This is despite the fact the every component in my pc is less than 5 months old except the CPU. I'm thinking the CPU may have died here.

I have tried everything. So it looks like bye bye.

My problem now is not so much buying the parts for a new computer - it is rescuing stuff off my hard drive. Hopefully I'll be able to do it.

I think I'm going to go for a fairly cheap Core Duo setup. My budget is £300 and this needn't include Graphics Card or PSU. If anyone has ideas, let me know. I'm not an overclocker so, you know.

Sigh.

Before you post. Please - I have simply come to the end of my tether with this particular machine. I do not want it working again except to save my stuff.
Enough is Enough.

You're sure it's the cpu? I would suspect the psu.

It would be a shame to go and buy new gear and it turn out not to be whats at fault

I've had the reset problem for a long time. Everything except the CPU was bought since I first had this problem.

To be honest, I'm just not in the frame of mind to go diagnosing it and trying to fix it. I've been trying to fix it for a long, long time. I've got the money to pay for a new system from scratch so I'm thinking thats what I'll do.

AP,

That might indeed be the PSU. I've had a similar issue not very long ago. What helped for me until I had a different PSU is shutting down the computer, disconnecting the power for several minutes. Then connect the power back and wait again a few minutes. Then try to boot it up again.

It's just extremely tempting to put this PC in a bag and drown it and start from scratch.
You know what? Since I've had this Pc, since I first built it, in Summer 2005, I have never been without a problem. Never.

I'll see about the PSU. I've got to think about this and think what to do.

I would say its almost definitely the PSU or HDD, your problem could be casued by insufficient power or a drive error.

Check the caps on the mobo. I'd be willing to bet they are on the way out.

You're on
I haven't heard of bad caps syndrome on rather modern boards at all (ie. anything newer than nforce2). If it's the board that malfunctioned it will probably be due to another reason.

I found some leaky caps by the cpu socket on a board not long ago. Would boot up to the windows logo and then shut down with the fans only still running. Replaced caps, all is well.
